Most of Mrs. Bush's humor at the correspondents' dinner was just right: Edgy but not over the edge. But I think the stripper and horse jokes were totally beneath her.
Just put it to the other-shoe test: If it were Teresa Heinz Kerry standing up on the dais telling the same jokes, the conservative commentariat would be buzzing for the rest of the year about what a tasteless skank she is.

If you enjoy being condescending, that's your prerogative. Lots of folks on here apparently do.
If my thoughts or the thoughts of others reinforces some stereotype of a straw man group conjured up to make people feel as if they are above the great unwashed, so be it. It doesn't harm me, I suppose. The trouble is, that isn't saying all that much, because those who criticized the jokes at that dinner weren't hurting me either. For some on here, one might have thought they got run over by a freight train.
I would reinterate that I really don't see what the big deal is. I thought it was fine, but some did not. To argue as some have that the GOP is going to disintegrate or that the sky will fall as a result of this is silly.

"As a former Atilla the Hun moved to the middle by the unintended consequence of deciding that I absolutely don't want to be aligned with people who have no humor and have such rigid "rules" about what constitutes a good anything."
Nicely said. As my best friend says "Moderation in all things" It's starting to make sense!

The Taliban believes in rigid control of women. So do the radical extremists on the right. They were offended that Laura even got UP to talk. At all. Little Woman should have just stayed in her seat and smiled.

I for one love risque things. Sexy things.
Having said that, I was disappointed by the First Lady's jokes regarding visiting strippers because hubby is too tired, and his playing with horse genitalia because he is supposedly stupid.
Don't think it's funny.
Coming from the first lady bothers me.
I despise the taliban rightists... but characterizing those of us who expected better from mr and mrs "I will restore honor to the white house" as being taliban... I too find very troublesome.
Leno doing it is one thing. The First Lady doing it? Seems beneath the dignity of the first family.
boy was I wrong... after all, I am a taliban for NOT liking her off color jokes.

And no, it's not the end of the world. Can you show me ONE post where someone said that what the First Lady did was going to RUIN the Republican party? Please.
All I can see is people who dissagreed with what the First Lady did (self included) and then get flamed from a thousand different directions for having this opinion.
Why?

What did I miss? You praised moderation. I took that to mean you're a moderate. I then gave the names of some other moderates. Did that hit too close to home?

"The Holier than Thou group will feel so vindicated and the hijacking of FR by the Taliban right will be complete."Nice hyperbole...for a mental deficient.
Do you ever tired of spewing your disemboweled horsesh*t all over Free Republic?

Every TV talking head had snips of Laura bringing down the house. Not a one had a single critical comment.
Of course, they did find some guests to complain!
I was dying laughing at her remarks about going to Chippendales.....and then saying that she would not have told but Sandra Day O'Connor and Ruth Ginsberg saw them there.

We're a neighborhood of mostly young retirees. Because we have so much time on our hands and are conservative, we talk politics a LOT.
I won't even go into the issues which have moved quite a few of us to the middle, but you probably know what they are. It's an unfortunate consequence of that classic overreaching I keep talking about as it is being expressed by a certain faction of the party. Instead of drawing people in, it's moving people out.

Did you notice how the liberal media gave HUGE play to her racy jokes? They loved those jokes - - because the jokes put her on Hollywood's side versus the Republican base's side in the culture wars. The libs will still go on hating and undermining the Bushes, but they're celebrating Laura, on this one occasion, for subtly dissing her husband's base.
