File this under unsubstantiated gossip. Was chatting with Jim Robbins. He keeps hearing this morning that the president might have some OBL news tonight? A new Islamist website is reporting that bin Laden is dead...and Musharraf has for the first time said publicly that OBL is in his country. We shall see...I'm skeptical. Jim is too. Jim adds wisely though: "if there is major terrorism news the president should just talk about that and talk domestic politics later -- if there is no major news, he should stick to his domestic agenda." Social Security reform rocks, but, uh, would get buried with OBL in the news coverage.
Still...skeptical. But I said Ratzinger wasn't going to be pope.
We wouldn't be stupid enough to announce obl's death. That would only infuriate the ragheads and make him a martyr.

This was in the Afgan war. Afterwards, heard some rumors it was OBL. A DNA team was sent it....lost track of the story.
Makes you wonder if it wasn't announced then to avoid martyr rage.....will be anxious to hear anything new.

Hmmmm...this morning on FOX NEWS both Fred Barnes and Bill Kristol were grinning while saying they think the pres will have some kind of announcement this evening- though neither one hinted at what it might be.
Well if it is true then we can all sing OBL-de OBL-da.
Yeah, but what if we showed him dead in a cave with empty cans of Spam lying around. So much for being a devoted muslim.

Yeah, I don't really see the point in announcing OBL's death.
If the government knows he's dead then good, they know he can't do us anymore harm...but wouldn't there be a ton of attacks after his death was announced?
On the other hand, maybe the government figures that it can't keep this a secret because it will eventually come out which would make the government look bad.
Or, it could be that OBL was captured.
But do we want this?
Anyway, I doubt very much that any of these things have happened, because I don't think Bush is so vain that he would inform us of this, I think some general would give the news conference.
I hate these rumors. They always get our hopes up and then we are disappointed that it's just a regular press converence.
Now that we have Zarqawi's laptop and Saddam's tapes we should know if they have a relationship now. That would be great if he opened with that.
My guess is that this press conference is to address the DeLay issue as well as Bolton getting a vote.
