A new view of the Eagle Nebula, one of the two largest and sharpest images Hubble Space Telescope has ever taken, is released by NASA for Hubble's 15th anniversary April 25, 2005. The new Eagle Nebula image reveals a tall, dense tower of gas being sculpted by ultraviolet light from a group of massive, hot stars. During the 15 years Hubble has orbited the Earth, it has taken more than 700,000 photos of the cosmos.

All an accident...Incremental evolution.
No overall plan.
Nope.

"a tall, dense tower of gas"
I thought that was emanating from the leadership of our Demagogic Party.....
Seriously, though, thanks for the stunning photos!!

Thank you VERY much. That is exactly what I was seeking, and I have already downloaded the "moderate" version to send as an attachment to my projected column.

If each picture was a MB in size, and each 700mb CD could have 700 photographs so 1000 CD's or a 4.7gb DVD would hold about 6800 photos or about 150 DVD's.Ouch!
Hubble images I have downloaded in the past have been typically closer to 7-10 Mb ,each. Makes for wonderful ability to crop, but that sure is a lot of data.

I wonder how many CDs or DVDs that would take to duplicate?Me too. I would love it if a DVD or something like that of the most spectacular images was available to purchase.

I wonder what it would be like to live on a planet near such a breathtaking nebula You take it for granted generally ... like earthers do with their moon. Many songs like ... Harvest Galaxy and By the light of the Spiraling Arms have been written though.

Thank you so very much for posting that most appropriate quote from scripture. Every time I gaze onto the wonders of the universe, I can't help shaking my head in sorrow that we human beings are so caught up in mindless, petty matters.

always wondered, are these pictures exact images? or are they recreations with color and such added inNo, they are not "human spectrum" images. If I remember correctly, they are images made of many different images at different wavelengths (including 'invisible' ones), with 'false' (arbitrary) colors assigned after the fact.

Thanks! Funny how these moon photos never seem to pick up those cities on the moon that Richard C. Hoagland always talks about on the Art Bell show. :-)

Yes, truly stunning. Actually, mere words don't suffice to describe such wonders.

Here is a link to the full resolution TIFF file from that site in post 55 . It's breathtaking, but probably too large a file to put in your column, CB.
TIFF photo.

Many of the space photo tiffs I work with are between 50 and 500 megs each.Have you discovered any reasonably-priced graphics software that can manipulate those size images at reasonable speeds?
CorelDraw and Photoshop do not qualify as "low-priced".
