I just read on broadcasting forum that Michigan talk radio pioneer Mark Scott has died of an apparent heart attack. Haven't seen any other sources.
Mark Scott was a strong voice for conservative talk radio on WXYT in Southfield, MI. Those of us who listened either loved him or hated him, sometimes both at the same time. We could never fault his love of America or his virtues of right and wrong.
He ended each show with a hearty EXCELSIOR!

Wow. He couldn't have been all that old.
He worked to keep himself fit and was an advocate of healthy eating too. He was sometimes angering to me, but always thought provoking.
Scott was no conservative voice.
He was hardcore Libertarian, an athiest and proabortion. He didn't advocate limited government - he advocated no government.
He was thought provoking however.
There was another radio personality on WXYT at the time - David Neuman. He was conservative and a great inteviewer. I don't know where Neuman is today?
I was a listener/caller of Marks from the mid-80's until he moved on just before WZYT went to all sports......a Korean War Veteran, cigar smoker, and Jeffersonian liberal Constitutionalist who took on 'cosmetic conservatives' as readily as he did contemporary liberals.
Sad to know he's not out there any more. (Mark Scott has left the building!)

Yea, You're right. In the true sense of conservative as we understand it he was not. But he always made you think.
David Newman suffered a stroke and some other medical problems a few years ago. I heard that he guest hosted a couple of shows recently on WJR.
Newman did some great work on WJR in Detroit during the fracas surrounding Gore's attempt to steal the 2000 election.
They then moved him out of the 10am time slot and I lost track of him
I used to listen to Mark Scott because he was on after Rush, but stopped after his drooling interview with a female porn star. It was disgusting and had NOTHING to do with current events and issues normally associated with the show. It was such a turnoff I never listened again. I just regret I didn't let the station know why I'd quit.
All the old, good Detroit radio hosts are gone . . . from J.P. to Mark Avery to Mark Scott. Can not stand the innane drivel on most talk radio stations there now - on JR, Paul W. is hardly J.P. although his ego would suggest otherwise and Mitch is so much liberal baloney that Mark Scott was a refreshing alternative for people, no matter how strident his libertarian, anti-government views.
Where's old Detroit?? Where's Billy Bonds when you need him?!!!!
Mark had been doing a WEB based radio show after he departed WXYT.

Mark Scott wasn't even a Libertarian, really, though it was closer than anything else. He was a staunch Objectivist, who found amusement in all sorts of things beyond the objective.
His work on WXYT was ground-breaking. He was lured to another Detroit powerhouse, only to get himself fired about a week later, if memory serves. His efforts since have been pretty sad; he was on a tiny, low power AM station for a time, and made several attempts at building a following on the web.
David Neuman, the last I heard, was having pretty major health issues. Another voice from the heyday of WXYT, John McCulloch, co-hosts a home improvement program on WJR with Murray Gula.
I'm saddened by Scott's passing. Excelsior, Mark!
I know, toupe and all. But what a waste - I mean can you picture him challenging Kwame to a fight, like he challenged Coleman!!! Now that was Detroit!! Most watched, drunkest TV anchor in town challenging the 70 year old mayor to a fight over his failure to pay child support for an illegitimate child - ALL ON THE 6:00 NEWS!!!! TV doesn't get any better than that!!!
I was just remembering his favorite caller, Rita from Detroit. She was a radical black Muslim who fervently believed that white doctors cut the tails off of white babies when they were born.
I looked forward to Rita's calls. She used to call Rush too.
John McCulloch started off real strong on WXYT but seemed to fade quickly into irrevelance.
Local talk radio in Detroit is woefully inadequate since WXYT disappeared into all sports oblivion.

Whenever Mark got into his discussions on religionists, I usually changed stations too. He was too anti-Christian.
I think he got burned big time by some ultra-fundamentalist in the past and carried a grudge. He made some oblique references to that.
I think the first time I listened to talk radio was when I was about 19. I was listening to Kevin Joyce and pulling up to a Bavarian Village Ski Shop in East Detroit. Whatever he was talking about got me hooked.
I actually had to replace two car stereos because AM quit working.
Too bad, I remember listening to WXYT, it helped get me through the Clinton years. I liked Mark Scott because he could be thought provoking and he was generally pro-homeschooling but, my fovorite was David Neuman.
