Every Easter thousands do exactly that.

Huh?

The past should stay the past, the evil dishonored.

By your logic, Saul should have never become the great missionary and pastor, Paul. His past was far too tainted.

You still haven't offered a solution to the "problem" you present.

"As a Protestant, I'm intrigued to see how his outreach takes shape. It'll be interesting."

He would have to concede a lot to heal the schisms with the eastern church and protestants. I would be impressed if he just had the humility to renounce papal infallibility.

Protestant (and other) converts are accepted into the Catholic Church every Easter. That is, they "willingly come under Papal authority."

And lots of Catholics switch to Protestantism, rejecting papal authority. Net is about 0.

Nitpicking sweeping generalizations is pointless.

True. We could be discussing how Pope Benedict is, as we speak, retrieving Hitler's brain from his basement in order to put into place his 60-year-old plan for world dominance.

You are out of your mind. This is the Pope that the Holy Spirit has chosen. If you want a feminist Pope or otherwise want the Church to conform to your social norms, then I suggest that you start your own flock.

I am sick and tired of so-called Catholics whining about the Church's failure to conform to their social mores or world view!!

Here's the solution:

The Pope should step down, apologize for seeking his own glory through seeking this station.

He should hand the reigns to someone free of the scars of the past.

He should ask the world for forgiveness for tempting evil to smile on this day.

And it that, he would, at last truly acknowledge and rid himself of his past.

I doubt that will happen, although I don't get as upset about that particular item as others do. I was thinking something along the lines of admitting that the whole selling of indulgences wasn't the Church's brightest hour.

As Protestants, we can start by openly dissassociating ourselves from the "All-Catholics-are-going-to-Hell" crowd. We have just as far to go as Catholics do.

You are extremely ignorant of the facts. The good Cardinal, at the age of 14, like all German Youth in the later part of WWII was compelled to join the Hitler Youth. Do you understand the words that is coming out of my mouth -- "compelled" = "forced"

And he was allowed to leave less than a year later to study for the priesthood.

Also, his father vocally opposed the Nazi movement and, in fact, was forced to move his family to escape them.

Finally, after being forced to join the Nazi Army, Raztinger deserted to the Americans, and then returned to the seminary.

Facts are stubborn things, aren't they!

Who?

I've asked you four times now, and you will not give a name. This tells me that you don't really have a solution to the so-called problem.

The Pope should step down, apologize for seeking his own glory through seeking this station.

He tried to resign years ago. JP2 wouldn't let him.

He was elected to this position by others. There is no evidence of him "seeking his own glory".

He should hand the reigns to someone free of the scars of the past.

That would be ... NOBODY.

"All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Heard that one before?

He should ask the world for forgiveness for tempting evil to smile on this day.

Yer awfuly hard on someone who was compelled to do some stuff as a kid many decades ago. There's some 60 years of his history since then to review for evidence of evil - care to tell us what horrible things he has done for the last half-century?

I don't think our FRiend Reformjoy understands that you just didn't have the option to say "no" in wartime Germany.

"Free of stains of the past"

-- by that standard even St. Peter himself could not have been Pope since he denied Christ 3 times.

So...besides his past...what problems exactly do you have with this Pope? Or are you just going to keep posting your drivel with "Kerry-esque" replies that "something" else should have been done while not offering any suggestions?

Granted, I am not Catholic, so this appointment means next to nothing to me, except that it is nice to see the Catholic church stand up to the world and say "No! We will not bend God's word to fit your lifestyles."

I have to say, I am peeking in on FR between loads of laundry and yard work. Thought you'd appreciate my chores :)

This guy is too funny. I swear, we should make popcorn and sell tickets!
