You need proof of a miracle for that.

Anything?

You DID say that our beloved new Holy Father would NOT be our beloved new Holy Father. ;-)

I did. I didn't think the cardinals would put a 78 year old cardinal who wanted to retire two years ago in the most stressful job in the Catholic Church.

It's the equivalent of George W. Bush nominating a 78 year old to the Supreme Court.

But, we should all pray for him. He has a very difficult job and stands in the shadow of one of the greatest popes of all time.

Unless the book has been revised over the last couple of years, it's a piece of trash. I think most of the "Dummies" books are excellent, but the one on Catholicism is junk. It keeps mentioning the Kennedys -- yes, as in Big Fat Ted Kennedy -- which should give you some indication of how low-brow (not to mention passe ) it is. I don't like to be negative, but I strongly recommend you not give that book to anyone sincerely interested in Catholicism.

I do not believe it to be an exact quote probably out of context. It is different being a Cardinal and a Pope because the Pope is the face of the Catholic Church. This is an excellent time to bring others in from the ranks of some Protestant Churches that have been severely disillusioned by the Pro abort and Pro gay stances of their once strict Church doctrine, and the foundering Catholics may join a similar church to The Catholic Church, but not with the numerous restrictions. Faith is in vogue (thankfully), He will be wonderful to all people of faith (I have Jewish Husband),and I believe it will be a new beginning for Catholics that strayed because of the pedophile priests. I have a friend who was a Pentecostal from NC his whole life and became Catholic at about 59 years old,and has never been happier. Pro-life and Pro-family ideals will unite all believers of every faith. This will be good for all of us because people see standards being followed and in this helter skelter world it is uplifting. People are looking for leadership and real faith, and I cannot wait for the Mel Gibson movie to come out about Pope JPII.

What did ya'll think when the Swiss Guard started marching into the Square just before the announcement?

For me... I thought it was AWESOME.

Long live Pope Benedict XVI!

Calling people who don't know much about catholicism dummies isn't going to win you any converts.

"It's the equivalent of George W. Bush nominating a 78 year old to the Supreme Court."

Well, it's the equivalent of GWB nominating a 78 year old to the court with the intellect of Rehnquist/Scalia and Thomas combined.....someone like that could be a one man wrecking ball on the court. THAT is more like what this is.

Incidentally and I hope no one is offended by this, but, I just have to see a small parallel here in this: remember when Cheney was in charge of the VP selection? Ha, look how that turned out.

As I understand it, Ratzinger sort of presided over the election. Guess he did ok.

This is just very compelling, exciting stuff. Flipped through my Malachi Martin and he seemed to think that Ratzinger is to the right of JPII.

We shall see!

Which of course makes me wonder, if V2 was wrong, how did it get past the infallible pope?

There is nothing wrong with the Second Vatican Council (though I would argue that it actually did not introduce any new doctrine, thus the mantle of infallibility is irrelevant.) There was much wrong with the alleged "Spirit of Vatican II," which has no basis in its documents.

For instance, VII's Constitution on Sacred Liturgy states that Latin should be retained for the ordinary parts of the Mass, so that Catholics everywhere can share in this universal practice. (For instance, when the world gathers for a Papal Funeral, we could all sing the parts of the Mass together, regardless of where we come from.)

The Church is just now regaining the true meaning of the Council.

As Jesus said, we can only hurt ourselves. The media sets the traps that lead people away from God, but if our faith is strong, it matters not a lick what Reuters thinks...

Rejoice!!!

I believe though that when I was a little mite (back in the -50's) there was a children's Catechism...perhaps a "kid's version" of the Baltimore Catechism????

We used Baltimore Catechism No. 1 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades, then moved on to Baltimore 2, which did us for grades 4 through 8. I think both covered the same basic material in the same format, but Baltimore 2 was more detailed. (I still have my Baltimore 2, but not Baltimore 1.)

"We Have a Pope!" That title sounds familar! :-)

That is exactly what the cardinals say when they choose a pope. Except they say it in Latin - "habemus Papam" literally means "we have a Pope."
