You haven't been here long enough to know that they get on my last nerve. :-)

Thanks for the advice though.

On DU, the very first word after it's Ratzinger is the F curse.

The voice of God has spoken (in Rome) and the voice of the devil has responded (on DU) with his usual lovely vocabulary.

That's how we can know, beyond doubt, that the good guys won big today.

seeks forgiveness while trying to explain how such a thing can happen in the hopes of preventing another such era.

Be vigilant always.

It could happen anywhere!

A good read from our new pope is called "In the Beginning".
It's on bible interpretation and Genesis. I loved it having read it years ago. I just picked up another copy from ebay.

plenty of things continue to apply to us, witness the terri schiavo case and the hubbub that caused, end of life issues apply even after conception ceases to be an issue. Being human means that we sin. should we recategorize things as NON-SINFUL, just so that we can feel good and holy ? i don't think so. that IS the problem with the moral decay and the feelgood society that we have and that IS what is driving the push towards modernization. and that is why it must be stopped. RIGHT IS RIGHT AND WRONG IS WRONG. our sinfulness does not change that. upholding RIGHT is a good thing, and why we are happy about a Pope who will continue to do that.

"Only Satan would suit the DUmmies"

Actually, I think they would love Hillary as pope.

Pro-choice, a feminazi, and not even Catholic in the name of diversity...

She'd have to pick a "Pope" name though. One whom she wants to follow in the footsteps of. Now THAT could be Satan.

"Please have a little patience with this non catholic guy with no time to read this whole thread."

Don't post until you've read every other post.

Just kidding! Nobody would be posting anything right now, huh?

"1. Has there ever been a German Pope? Seems if there has been it was a long time ago. I like the idea of trying to internationalize the church."

I dunno.

"2. From what I've read, Ratzinger seems like a good guy, but why so old?"

Time tested. Takes a long time for most to reach top positions.

"3. What changes from JP II can be expected?"

Tougher line on homosexuals, and intense frictions with the Jewish community.

"4. Could he have been chosen simply to fill a few years so the position can go back to an Italian (the fact that there were so many Italian popes in a row strongly suggests the choice is more than a little political)?"

I doubt it.

"5. Will he fill cardinal vacancies with the same type of men that JP II did?"

Tougher, if anything.

"6. What is the state of the American cardinal delegation? Can we expect changes there (are any of them quite old)? I would like to see more conservative hierarchy here, but I understand that the church is in dire position concerning the priesthood here as well as with sisters. Anybody have an idea how the church can remain conservative yet be more attractive for younger people?"

I'm just shooting at the hip, note. But being a former Catholic, I think the US Catholic clergy is going to hate his guts.

"It's important for me that the church come to grips with its scandals (I think they did a bad job with the molestation problems - perhaps JP II was too ill or didn't want to get his hands dirty), but it also important that it maintains its values and be a force of constancy."

I think you'll like him.

Sorry, I don't want to ruin anyone's thread! I don't see how honest discussion can be bad. I don't look at those folks as the enemy, I guess.

St. Benedict was the Father of Western Monasticism - he had a twin sister named Scholastica, who also became a nun. He developed what is known as A Rule of Life, which many other monastic orders follow.

Lay people can benefit from the Rule of Life as well.

The Inquisition only applied to heretical self-described Catholics

Cow Pies!

The Inquisition lasted for over 500 years. You might want to read some Jewish history (I know: HORRORS!). Quite a few of them were not "self-described catholics".

lasted a short 8 years

This current Benedict's father was a Nazi in his youth
_________________________________________________________

According to the prophecy, the next Pope will be the second last Pope Gloria Olivæ ("Glory of the Olives").

The last one probably

Petrus Romanus, who according to St. Malachy's list is to be the last pope
Translated: Peter the Roman The Final Pope

Subject: Gloriae Olivae vs. Petrus Romanus
http://second-coming.christnet.alt.newsgrouptopics.com/gloriae+olivae+vs.+petrus+romanus/2756

In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Catholic Church,
there will reign Peter the Roman. Who will feed his flock among many tribulations, after which the 7 -hilled city,
will be destroyed and the dreadful JUDGE will judge the people

Be honest, Laz -- how good a campaign did you REALLY run? LOL.

The Pope is a man who strives for impeccable moral and faithful adherence to the Church and her teachings and fierce defense of her values, traditions and laws. I pray God's blessings on this man, called to greatness and leadership in these tumultuous and evil times.

He will surely depend on and need the support of the faithful, and, as he said, our Lord and Blessed Mary, and the community of saints to help him traverse the troubled waters of these times.. and to keep the Catholic Church intact and whole amidst the cacaphony of cries for liberalization, bending the rules, and blurring the lines of the purity of the Church.

He's had a good and faithful teacher .. and one whom I'm sure shares in our smiles, relief and gratitude for this day.

God Bless You, John Paul II. John Paul II -- I LOVE YOU!! You chose this man as your close colleague .. you knew and prepared his path. Smile on us and bless your new brother in Christ, and all of us, we pray, in Jesus' name. Amen.

LONG LIVE POPE BENEDICT XVI!!
