Conservative Lawmaker: DeLay Should Quit

WASHINGTON -- One of Congress' most conservative members on Friday became the second House Republican to urge Majority Leader Tom DeLay to step aside because of the ethics scrutiny he's facing.
"If the majority leader were to temporarily step aside so that these trumped up charges can be dealt with in a less hostile environment, as they have proven to be an unnecessary distraction, it may be a productive move," said Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo.
Tancredo's comments come after Connecticut Rep. Chris Shays, a moderate Republican, urged DeLay to resign from his leadership position at the beginning of the week. Also, Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, the No. 3 Republican in the Senate, said DeLay needs to answer questions about his ethics.
Tancredo, elected in 1998, said he believes all charges against DeLay, R-Texas, "lack merit" and are "being leveled in the hopes of bringing him down and with him, the Republican majority."
Tancredo is known in the House for his tough stand on immigration and has 100 percent rating from the American Conservative Union for votes and his position on issues.
DeLay has been dogged by questions for months about his overseas travel, corporate fundraising in 2002 for Texas legislative campaigns, campaign payments to family members and his connections to a lobbyist now under federal investigation.
Some GOP colleagues have suggested his continuing ethics controversy is harming the GOP, while others say the criticism has been orchestrated by Democrats and their liberal allies.
DeLay has said he is eager to appear before the leaders of the House ethics committee and give "everything I have" in connection with allegations of misconduct. Spokesman Dan Allen provided a similar comment Friday and cited a list of accomplishments by House Republicans with DeLay as majority leader.
Before DeLay can meet with the ethics committee, Democrats and Republicans must resolve a deadlock over rules Republicans pushed through the House. Democrats oppose the changes.
Have they not heard the left no longer controls the flow of info anymore?
Chaffee, Collins, Snowe, McCain, Shays, get rid of the useless, backstabing, dems in drag.
Toast.
Agree.
Let me see if I have gotten this right.
You post an article about Congressman DeLay and why he must quit, (from New Max no less) make statements indicating DeLay should partake of a poison pill for the good of all, get several posters commenting in the negative, and you take your bat and ball and go home?
My young friend, you are not only naive, you are not quite ready for pime time.
See ya!
1.--You agree with the statement of the poster...and 'toast' his comment?
2.--You disagree with the poster's statement and believe tancredo is .....toast? :)
>>>>Tancredo, elected in 1998, said he believes all charges against DeLay, R-Texas, "lack merit" and are "being leveled in the hopes of bringing him down and with him, the Republican majority." <<<<<
Tancredo says he believes Delay is innocent and that the charges against him are to bring him down, then in the next sentence he wants to help the opposition by convincing Delay to go down quietly. If I have a friend who is being wrongly accused I would fight my way thru hell for the guy, not ask him to bite the bullet. Now I am no a Delay fan but we all know there is no such thing as stepping down temporarily. If he steps down he will stay down.
Tom Tancredo is a great American. As for you? We know you by your intemperate remakes on illegal immigration. By your cave in to illegal alien invaders. Your lack of understanding of US sovereignty. Goodbye.
And another potential GOP candidate in 2008 is attempting to end his candidacy earlier than expected....
And I really really REALLY wanted to watch him implode in the primaries.....darn it darn it darn it!!!
I don't recall Tom Delay starting it.
HA!
DeLay stepping aside would just set up another outspoken
Republican as the next hate campaign lynching target.
Newt Gingrich should never have stepped aside.
Nobody should ever step aside.
Damn the media!
In your face, all the time, every time!
Yes, just like Hitlery Rotten Klintoon is a moderate.
FWIW, every show today will comment on "even conservative Republicans are calling for Tom Delay to step aside." This is why it was very stupid for Tancredo to attack him.
I am watching Fox right now and the Dem consultant invited on to discuss this issue just named every Republican who has criticized Mr DeLay. Funny how they have such perfect memories when it comes to attacking Republicans, and no memory when a Democrat is accused of bad behavior.
Good question.
Tancredo is showing how he will seize an issue to get publicity and grandstand. Some folks are saying that is what is going on here and also is why he grabbed the border issue.
Nobody can distinguish them on their voting records. They are both solid Conservatives.
Here are their rating per the ACU:
However, I'll take Tom Delay over Tom Tancredo ANY day of the week. He stands on principle and steadfastly.
Here's an in your face pic for the Liberal
lyin' jerks trying to smear Delay!
Huh??
this looks like an idiotic attempt to mimic John McCain. Tancredo was going no where in the RW Republican hierarchy, so maybe he felt he could satisfy the MSM's Current thirst for a "conservative" to attack Delay. Foolishness of the highest order.
I have worked for the county I live in for almost twenty seven years. I am not political in any way at work. Sometimes I've wondered how I made it this far. One thing I have learned a long time ago is that the one that is being targeted is probably not the problem. Look at the ones doing all the accusing. They are nervous and trying to keep the heat off them. Tom Delay is not the problem here. Look at the ones on both sides that are trying to make him quit. Their wonderful little world is crumbling and they don't like it.
Tom Trancedo, the McCain clone in 2008!!
LOL
Why o why doesn't the RW people just point out that such comments by the Deaniacs or any Democrat talk-pointers ARE SIMPLY IN BAD FAITH. They are not honest observers of the passing scene.
