Queen Mary 2 to Dock in Brooklyn
Newsday ^ | April 16th, 2005 | Associated Press

Posted on 04/16/2005 11:45:21 AM PDT by M. Espinola

NEW YORK -- Four luxurious passenger ships, including the Queen Mary 2 and the Queen Elizabeth 2, will abandon Manhattan's Hudson River piers and begin docking in Brooklyn next year.

Carnival Corp. will move the berths of the four ships to a huge pier the city is redeveloping in the Red Hook section, city and company officials said.

The city hopes the shift will create thousands of jobs, spur retail and tourist-industry development and breathe new life into what was once a bleak warehouse district, and bring 250,000 more passengers to the city each year on top of the current 900,000.

The new pier will accommodate the 1,132-foot Queen Mary 2 -- the world's largest passenger ship -- plus the 963-foot Queen Elizabeth 2, the Star Princess and the Crown Princess, which makes its debut next year. At the old West Side Passenger Ship Terminal in Manhattan, the stern of the Queen Mary 2 stretches 132 feet beyond the pier into the Hudson River.

I wish them luck, I really do. Redhook was a bleak warehouse area of Brooklyn 30 years ago when my dad was a beat cop there.

I believe area has been used as location for movies, etc. Good to see something being done for a rather bleak area.

I can't think of any movie titles off the top of my head - but I do believe you are correct.

I hope this works, I really do.

I moved out of Brooklyn more than 20 years ago - but still have family and friends there.

Yeah, let's give some Brooklyn goombahs a chance to extort foreigners, loot baggage, steal freight and put buddies who never show up on the payroll. When you buy a case of booze at the duty free and add it to your baggage, do the ship baggage handlers when they steal a bottle out of every case, still put a couple of pieces of broken bottle where the stolen bottle was to suggest that the bottle had broken?

Do the same union locals who work the West River piers also work the Brooklyn docks or are they different locals?

The QE II looks like a proper ship. I'm not sure what the Alien Princess is supposed to be.

Red Hook remains a rather bleak warehouse area with some great views of lower Manhattan.

This should give this section of Brooklyn a financial shot in the arm. It's worked in other coastal cities. Now would be an advantages time to buy in.

Maybe this is the beginning of another version of the South Street Seaport?

You are correct. I was born in Park Slope and grew up in Flatbush.

This should do wonders for Red Hook, and another South Street Seaport type area would be super!

Inside the Queen Mary II

Even a planetarium!

This hallway leads to the Royal Court Theater which offers many productions and has the feel of a Victorian music hall.
