Population increases in Bay Area overall, but decline continues in San Francisco
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 4/15/5 | Tyche Hendricks

The population of the Bay Area increased last year for the first time in three years -- driven by growth in Santa Clara and Contra Costa counties -- but the number of people in San Francisco continued the downward slide that began in 2000, the U.S. Census Bureau reported Thursday.

Economists and planners, who say population growth is linked to economic growth, see the Bay Area's modest increase -- an estimated 9,895 more people in July 2004 than a year earlier -- as a sign that the nine-county region's job prospects are improving.

The population growth in Santa Clara County, some of those analysts said, is evidence that the dot-com bust has finally ended and that the economy is beginning to turn around.

"Regarding employment, things are picking up gradually," said Anthony Marek, a spokesman for the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, a business consortium. "Things are obviously better than they were, but we still have a long way to go."

Others were caught off-guard by the new numbers.

. . . . Mixed picture in Bay Area

While California's total population grew by 1.2 percent from 2003 to 2004, the growth in the Bay Area was just 0.1 percent. Santa Clara and Contra Costa counties each netted more than 9,000 additional residents, but San Francisco, Alameda and Marin counties all lost population.

San Francisco, which lost 7,678 residents last year, dropping to 744,230 people, had the largest and steepest population decline of any county in the state, according to the census tally.

I can't understand why. Gavin Newsom has been so aggressively pro-business. He certainly hasn't allowed meaningless grandstanding or shameless electioneering interfere with his drive to make San Francisco an economic powerhouse.

Ha! We get that many new illegals every week.

Maybe because homosexuals can't reproduce? At least we have something to be thankful for.

It is such a shame to see what the liberals have done to that beautiful city.

B-b-but I thought all the homosexuals wanted was to raise children in their happy land. Ya mean they lied about that?

Well duh. Only the MSM couldn't figure this one out. The city is populated by gays and liberals, so all the normal people (who tend to have 2 or more children) have all left.

Jeez, from the upward sprialing cost of homes in Marin county, one would not conclude that there is excess supply on the market. I do know that some additional housing could be made available by deporting all the illegals in San Rafael. Would probably reduce highway congestion for a while also.
