DETROIT (AP) Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick on Tuesday presented a draft budget that includes 754 additional layoffs, including some in the police and fire departments.
Detroit has been struggling with a deficit of more than $300 million, and some have predicted the city could end up in receivership.
The 754 layoffs are in addition to more than 900 job cuts that Kilpatrick announced in January. At that time, he said he had no plans to touch police officers.
In his address to City Council on Tuesday, Kilpatrick proposed reducing the number of commanders and inspectors in the department. In addition, existing classes at the police academy would be suspended, he said.
"Not one police officer who is out there patrolling the streets today will be laid off," Kilpatrick said.
However, he said that promise could be kept only if the officers' union agrees to renegotiate benefits.
In addition, Kilpatrick is proposing 61 layoffs in the fire department and 47 in EMS.
A blank slate on which to build again. It is the only way.
WORST business climate in the nation is in Michigan and Ohio.
The airport is in Romulus. City Airport hasn't been commercial in 10+ years....maybe because it's in one of Detroit's rougher areas. (6 mile and Van Dyke)
That's in the next section, "What to do if your socialist idyll didn't come about as planned."
"Well John, what an exciting Superbowl. Two teams bloodying themselves all over the field. Fighting it out on the ground and in the air, just look at that police chopper going down. I'd say the Crips have the advantage, Bloods are battered up and lying all over the parking lot. I just hope it's just as exciting inside the stadium..."
And, don't sell Conyers short! He is one of the crookedest dems that's ever come down the pike and probably is responsible for most of the fraudulent votes in the midwest. If Chirac had his choice of any sleazy dem to help him rig the EU election, he'd pick Conyers. And, if it in any way an anti-American cause, Conyers would say yes.
Bingo.
That's partly because we have a small business tax.
I know. Here in Washington State, we have the business occupancy tax which is levied on receipts for the year. Its rather high but so is tax evasion in this state. On the plus side, there is no state income tax.
Good description. Things were starting to turn around under Mayor Archer, but he was so sick of the attacks he left the city too. Since his exit, things are back to normal. The attitude you contributed to Conyers is typical of the majority of Detroit's residents. They can't understand why thier "proud Democrats" are letting the Republicans destroy thier city.
Socialism is as fascism does.
BTW, if anyone is coming to the Super Bowl next year, I have a house in Dearborn you can rent.
That's right. I tried to put the whole place out of my mind when we left. Hubby has gone through a couple of times though and said it actually turned out pretty nice. I still remember everyone who used to call into the radio shows and say, "What's wrong with our airport?". Oh my gosh! It was so unreal.
"The smart ones will stay in Windsor and only go to Detroit for the game."
One smart group will stay in Dearborn! (Gratuitous advertisement to rent my house for the week!)
Are you talking about the tornado? I really can't remember that detail. I just remember we were watching and going "now where is the tornado damage?".
Why doesn't Kwame start his budget cuts by firing his 34 body guards who make between $100,000 and $250,000 a year.
"WORST business climate in the nation is in Michigan and Ohio."
No shock then that the worst unemployment rate in the country is MI. No worries tho', it's Bush's fault, move along, nothing to see here!
The only problem with Windsor will be if the bridge or tunnel get backed up for some reason. I'm thinking folks might even stay as far away as Toronto....or at CSM's house.
I glanced the article and saw that. I guess I wasn't clear. I live in a big city that does the same thing every few years -- normal shakedown. What I was trying to say, is that there are many bureaucrats that are essentially doing no real work. The politicians always seem to want to lay off people who actually do beneficial work. It is a scare tactic that sadly works. I know the situation in Detroit is bad and that is a shame. Believe me, across this great land politicians and bureaucrats are always making people's lives worse. At least people still have the ability to move from locales that punish the achievers. I had to do that. People voting with their feet can slowly bring about change. Eventually the host (bad government) will decay enough where situation can finally improve through new blood. Of course, that is rare.
Thanks for the plug.....I'm about 20 minutes from the stadium and I am relatively confident that shuttles will be traveling to that area during the festivities. Dearborn is expecting a hugh and series influx of visitors. West Dearborn is very nice and it is generally a working class type of crowd with a couple of very nice restaurants.
It is a great alternative to staying in Detroit. In fact, the Hyatt and Ritz, about 10 min from me in Dearborn, have been booked by the NFL since the decision was made.
I promise that my pet moose doesn't bite and I'll stock the fridge with cheese. In addition, Dearborn beebers don't stun!
Oooops, there I go again, hijacking threads.
If his Mom's in town, they might have to worry about some Redhead bugging them, if they go out!!!
OTOH, he does need Detroit's finest to keep the media off his back.
LOL. I know Dearborn well. And my hubby once got to work in lovely Melvindale.
