The Bush administration is advocating the weaponization of space to sustain the global dominance of the U.S. military
While the aggressive new policy aimed at making U.S. satellites capable of striking enemy targets both on the ground and in orbit may be scuttled by controversy or prohibited by cost, elements within the White House and the Pentagon will continue to stress the military's increasing dependence on satellite technology and the dangers associated with sharing more and more outer-space real estate with other nations not always in synch with U.S. interests, the Christian Science Monitor reported

outer-space real estate It isn't real estate unless somebody with the powers of use and alienation it owns it.

That is a helluva lot better than "UN Spacey" (that is for the fellow Macross fans out there)

They need to develop a individual person capable targeting
weapon , some kind of laser or particle beam , to take out bad guys selectively . Call it Global Opponent Deleter , or G.O.D.
something like that ;^)
Far better to selectively go directly for the Saddam's
Kim Jong Il's , Castro's and whomever , than attacking entire
countries , peoples and cultures. The downtrodden would thank us for this in the long run.

Why make a separate branch?
The Navy gets the Star Destroyers.
The Air Force gets the TIE Fighters.
The Army gets the Stormtroopers.
And the Marines will somehow get all the credit.

LOL! Seriously, it could be a multi service force under a seperate name. We have seen the development of SpecOps forces that draw from two or more services. The Space Defence Forces could be such a critter (one organisation encomapssing personnel from the different services).
