Bush to View Pope's Body Upon Arrival
AP ^ | April 6, 2005

Posted on 04/06/2005 12:26:19 PM PDT by West Coast Conservative

President Bush will view the body of Pope John II immediately upon his arrival Wednesday from Washington, Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said.

Bush and a U.S. delegation that includes two former presidents were flying to Rome late Wednesday to attend Friday's funeral, along with kings, presidents and government leaders from some 100 countries.

It was not immediately known if other heads of state would view the body, which has been lying in state in St. Peter's Basilica since Monday afternoon.

Dignitaries were being allowed to skip the massive line of pilgrims that snaked down a wide boulevard, through ancient alleyways and onto a bridge.

"I am about to faint on a lot of the coverage from CNN"

LOL! It's been unbelievable.

Could it be they've seen the light, so to speak? :)

I did not see Andy Card make The Sign of the Cross when he knelt, so Im assuming he's not Catholic.

"Watching the replay, I was struck by how strange it must be to pay homage while having flashbulbs going off in your face every few seconds and knowing TV cameras are beaming this solemn, most personal moment live all around the world."

Yes, kristinn. That's something that I hadn't thought of, and it is unimaginable, given those circumstances, to have the ability to block it *all* out, during one's thoughts and prayers of the moment.

My hope and prayer is that our great Prez and his delegation were able to successfully do so, and have their moment, completely and in calm.

CNN has me baffled -- I went there for coverage of the Pope when Shep irritated me so bad and have been going there a lot and shaking my head at what has happened to CNN in this coverage which for the most part has been pretty fair.

"Turned out the biggest need was for water buffalo's."

It was amazing, how so many thousands of young people walked for several miles in the hot, dry Denver weather to hear the Pope at Cherry Creek state park. They saw it as a pilgrimage. Many of them passed out.

I think the walk was from downtown to the park, and I've been trying to find confirmation, but I think it's around 15 or 16 miles.

Somewhere in a box, I have mine, veil, from Catholic School. As we attended mass every morning under the scrutiny of nuns, one was best not to forget your little veil for your head.

Yes, it has been strange. Maybe because the Pope transcends politics? I don't get it.

Anyway, have to log off to make dinner. Have a nice evening, PKM! :)

"Bill Clinton befriended Nixon in his final years. He was much friendlier with Nixon than he was with Jimmy Carter. I understand the two can't stand each other."

If that's true about Carter, it's not surprising. Carter was instrumental in screwing Clinton in North Korea and we're still felling those ill effects. He tried to undercut Clinton all thru his 8 years too, albeit to a much lesser extent than sniping at W; but he still did it.

"The First Lady and Sec. Rice were wearing black veils over their hair"

we always called them "chapel veils"

I sure hope the Euros have enough class not to stage an anti-Bush demonstration at the funeral.

Where would they demonstrate? Sicily? Rome's streets are filled with mourners, not a square foot of room for nasty protestors.

"Clinton said, noting the throngs the pope would consistently draw, said, "The man knows how to build a crowd."
Ugh. That last comment was certainly crass."

I completely agree, but I hope it doesn't surprise you.

We believe in the 'communion of saints', that is, that those who have gone on before us may be asked to pray for us just as any other friend might be asked.

The expression 'pray to' comes from centuries ago when 'pray' also meant requesting from anybody, not just God.

Examples: 'Prithee' (Shakespearean)- I pray thee, in old movies you've heard lines like, "and what, pray tell, does that mean?". Not praying to the person, but asking or requesting something, a polite request.

A lot of non-Catholics don't understand our devotion to Mary. My dad was raised Methodist and coverted in 1965 (my mom's family were all Catholics so we were already being raised Catholic). He never had a problem "getting" it but he was always gung-ho about his conversion.

It looked like when they first knelt was their moment. Then the bulbs started flashing.

"when Hillary went with Bill, during his presidency, to the Vatican, not only did she not wear a veil, but she wore pants"

That's what's known as a Blessing.
