HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (AP) Two pit bulls attacked and killed their owners' 6-year-old girl in the backyard of a home near Detroit, state police say.
Cassidy Jeter was killed Monday morning, said state police Lt. Harold Love.
The girl had known the pit bulls since they were puppies, The Detroit News said.
Cassidy and a younger child were walking down an alley next to the home about 9 a.m. when the dogs attacked, Love said. The family recently moved out of a home around the corner, and the dogs were still staying at that house. The alley separates the two homes.
"For some reason the dogs were loose, and one of them attacked the girl," Love said.
The other dog apparently joined the attack. The younger child climbed a fence to get away, and the girl's mother tried to save her daughter.
"The mother tried to beat the dogs off the girl with a 2-by-4," Love said. "She was screaming for help from the neighbors."
The girl was dead at the scene. Police shot the dogs to death.
Police in the Detroit enclave of Hamtramck asked state troopers to investigate because a person died and its officers used their weapons.
This is exactly what I'm talking about, I'm not saying the death of the girl, which is a tragedy, is the hype part. If this was a pair of Rottweilers, Dobermans, Chows, German Shepherd, etc. etc. this story would never have been posted here, and all the dogs are equally dangerous if not more so as they all outweigh a pure-bred APBT, often these stories don't even confirm the actual breed of the dog that did it.
I've owned and been around APBTs my life, they are brilliant, loyal dogs who are as loving and gentle as any other breed when raised properly. The problem is not the dog, it's the owner.
They left out the part about the dogs arriving on the scene in their SUV.
Bump for later.
Maybe, just maybe, you missed the sarcasm....
I missed it too!
Google. I always forget to use Google. Thanks.

And now what?
The officers will be charged with animal cruelty and suspended? /sarcasm
Why anyone would own a dog originally bred specifically for fighting is beyond me. Especially with young children in the house. I suppose it's too much to expect other pit bull owners to learn from this.
Our late, departed Golden Retriever, Prior Lake Jake, liked nothing better than ice out day in Minnesota. He'd plunge right in no matter how cold the water was.
The appeal is that if trained properly they are a great family dog. The very traits that make pitbulls dangerous in the wrong hands are the traits that make them a great pet in the right hands. Pitbulls have an incredibly high pain tolerance - so if trained properly they are great with kids because kids can tug on their ears, ride them, and step on their feet without the pitbull biting out of fear - like most small dogs do. Further, they are very tenacious, which is a good trait in a well trained dog because you can train them to do virtually anything, and they have undying loyalty to their family - so long as they are trained properly. Pitbulls should be thought of like a gun. They are good things to have around in most cases, but in the wrong hands there will be serious trouble.
Right! Probably asking for money for counseling pit bulls that make wrong decisions because they are disadvantaged in some way.
You are the first one to have the stones to tell it like it is. There is no question that this story consistently repeats within the city limits of Detroit, Atlanta, Baltimore, Newark, The Bronx, etc.
P.S. Pit Bulls don't kill; they just make wrong/poor decisions.
Some years ago Lon Island that was a story about a family pet, a St. Bernard, that for no apparent reaspon turned on the 6 year old girl, to whom the dog previously had seem devoted since birth, and mauled her to death. The dog was shot by police who responded to the scene. When the vet examined the carcass...they found a #2 pencil had been driven through the dog's ear and into the brain.
Possibly. But if it your yorkie flips a switch and attacks you could fight it off with a fly swatter. When a pit goes nuts on you you're in trouble.
Yep. I just read a story about some guns who chased some little girls the other day. The gun went right up and shot her.
Then there was the story about some SUV's who attacked a little boy....
It's good to have at least one other person here who knows something more about pitbulls than what the "news" tells them. I'm going to go home today and tell bella that she's a "four legged land shark", I'm sure she'll lick my face right before she freaks out and destroys me.
