Family's two pit bulls kill Hamtramck girl, 6
4/5/2005, 4:28 a.m. ET
The Associated Press

HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (AP) — Two pit bulls attacked and killed their owners' 6-year-old girl in the backyard of a home near Detroit, state police say.

Cassidy Jeter was killed Monday morning, said state police Lt. Harold Love.

The girl had known the pit bulls since they were puppies, The Detroit News said.

Cassidy and a younger child were walking down an alley next to the home about 9 a.m. when the dogs attacked, Love said. The family recently moved out of a home around the corner, and the dogs were still staying at that house. The alley separates the two homes.

"For some reason the dogs were loose, and one of them attacked the girl," Love said.

The other dog apparently joined the attack. The younger child climbed a fence to get away, and the girl's mother tried to save her daughter.

"The mother tried to beat the dogs off the girl with a 2-by-4," Love said. "She was screaming for help from the neighbors."

The girl was dead at the scene. Police shot the dogs to death.

Police in the Detroit enclave of Hamtramck asked state troopers to investigate because a person died and its officers used their weapons.

Classified ads appearing for APBT breeders in Dog Fancy Magazine include Land Shark Kennels, Monster Squad Kennels, and Jurassic Kennels. Is there any mystery to what kind of person this marketing is being directed?

I don't...but have you tried doing a Google search...or maybe the American Kennel Club site -- www.akc.org (sorry, I'm too low tech to do hyperlinks, so you have to cut and paste the address.)

LulaBelle is only 3 years old. She has weighed 75 pounds since she was 8 months old. She is about a year old in that picture. I try not to think about losing her some day. She is an important member of the family.

I'm looking into dogs that can help with our horses, but yet still be a family member.

Roy and Dale chose a German Shepherd.

The owner of these dogs is responsible because they did not take the necessary precautions to avoid such a tragedy.

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner!

No sane person would leave a loaded gun laying around. The dogs were apparently left at the former residence to guard it, (my conclusion--pets would have moved to the new place right away, imo), and guard it they did, against even the owners' own child. Anyone wandering in there would have been fair game for the dogs.

I had sworn off boats 10 years ago. When we got LulaBelle, I bought Boston Whaler Sport 130. She loves to ride and swim, swim and ride, ride and swim. Retrieve and swim and ride.

You took what I said out of context.

Actually I would agree with you. It's the same thing. Why risk having a pit bull or 'reformed' child molester around your kids?

Expect the "Pit Bulls are no more aggressive than any other dog" crowd to come around soon...

I pity anyone who looses a child whether out of stupidity or not. This isn't like the sofa got chewed up.

I will agree that Pippin barks at things we sometimes can't see. But he will bark. Back when we were in our twenties and the oldest kids were still babies, my husband's black lab was so laid back (we were thinking of the kids) that he wouldn't bark at strangers at all. The only thing they had to worry about was being slobbered on. Not really what you want in a watch dog.

We are dog lovers here as well and my biggest heartburn with some dogs is that they haven't been properly trained. Obnoxious dogs and obnoxious children drive me up a wall. And both are caused by irresposible adults.

No more mystery than the kind of "pet" they are offering.

Any dog of any breed allowed to run loose then hurt someone needs to result in the owner getting charged for the crime. Murder, assault, etc... No excuses no exceptions. People have a right to live without fear of an irresponsible owner's dog.

He'd be set, his pick-up, his canoe and his lab.

Mine will swim till she is too tired to move. Mention bath and she is so gone. If it is raining she looks at you like this is some diabolical way to give her a bath. In the rain she will do her business on the run to get back out of the rain.

My husband had a black lab when we were in the Air Force. It was his dog and the dog knew it. It was a big male that I couldn't control. My husband was gone alot and I got stuck trying to deal with the dog. My husband went TDY (temporary duty away) for 8 weeks, when he came back he asked me, "where's Fadango?" I got a blank look on my face and said, "Who is Fadango?" He said, "the dog." I said, "what dog?" I know he wants another one; I think the pick-up, the canoe and the kids are his method of getting one again. Now that he isn't gone all the time it would be okay, probably; but don't tell him that! :)

It is pretty easy to tell if a dog is dangerous or not. First, I wouldn't allow my kids to be around a dog that I did not trust. I would no where my child was going and what they were doing so there would be less risk of them being randomly attacked by dogs running loose. I would also teach my child how to deal with violent dogs. There are certain things that need to be looked for when determining if a dog is nice or not. Is its back hair standing up, is the dog puffed up to look big, is it in a stiff position, is it growling, etc. I have encountered many dogs that could have been violent toward me, but because I know how to handle them I don't worry. If people would do a little research on dogs and not get in over their heads no one would have to worry about things like this.
