Just read this segment in Taranto's WSJ Best of the Web.

"In a fascinating essay for The Weekly Standard, Eric Cohen argues that what went wrong in the Schiavo case was that "procedural liberalism"--the respect for Mrs. Schiavo's right to make her own decisions--gave way to "ideological liberalism"--the presumption that because she was unable to make such decisions, her life was worthless:

Treating autonomy as an absolute makes a person's dignity turn entirely on his or her capacity to act autonomously. It leads to the view that only those with the ability to express their will possess any dignity at all--everyone else is "life unworthy of life."

This is what ideological liberalism now seems to believe--whether in regard to early human embryos, or late-stage dementia patients, or fetuses with Down syndrome. And in the end, the Schiavo case is just one more act in modern liberalism's betrayal of the vulnerable people it once claimed to speak for.

Opinion on the Schiavo case did not split along traditional left-right lines, of course; libertarian-leaning conservatives tended to side with those who wished to pull her feeding tube. Autonomy and compassion are both important values, and there are dangers in overvaluing either at the expense of the other.

It does seem, though, that the "religious right," for better or worse, has supplanted the liberal left as the political faction that most strongly and consistently advocates compassion in social policy."

but I seem to recall that Schiavo and at least one of his relatives came forth to testify to her wishes, while the Schindlers were unable to find anyone to directly refute it.

It was 7 years AFTER her broken back, ankles, knees, femur, ribs and who knows what else took place that this character all of a sudden remembered she wanted to be starved to death...

Former Schindler attorney Pat Anderson told Hannity today that the Medical Examiner has announced that there will be no independent examiners at the autopsy---apparently he's in charge and intends to be solely in charge.

I don't see in the Constitution where you have the right for an honest autopsy./s

I usually see the threat to my child in the form of islamicfascism, but today has made me see that there are other threats to our way of life beside terrorism.

That was my number one fear as well, protecting her against them. I find it's my own country I need to be worried about. The judges who think her life isn't worthy because she isn't 'perfect'. We love her the way she is, it's what makes her who she is. To know that somewhere down the road a judge may decide that she isn't worthy....Lord, help us. No. Lord help them.

Because mindlessness and apathy are easy. No strength or character required.

Just now, on Greta, someone from the Schindler camp - David (a lawyer?), talking about how we must now see what Terri's legacy will be- that God had a purpose, and what can we do now to change things for the next person. He said it much better than that but very true.
He also said that the legal team, gov. Bush and everyone did all they could, and we must now take the next steps.
I really hope all the Bush bashing ends, it's wrong and non-productive. The Left would love to see us destroy ourselves and not make any progess.

I'm sorry, but "clear and convincing evidence" should consist of a bit more than comments that are little more than hearsay, and not even believable ones at that. Using this judge's logic, we'd all better be careful on even making throwaway comments, like "I wanted to die" after seeing something bad, because such flimsy evidence will be our own death sentences. And that has nothing to do with the law, but the judge.

One other thing -- aren't you the least bit curious as to Michael Schiavo waited until *after* winning the malpractice suits against the doctors to tell a judge about Terri's wish to die? He constantly says that he is merely fulfilling her wishes, yet he waited a good eight years before actually attempting to act on her alleged wish.
