Police 'Showdown' Averted ['Team of State Agents Were En Route to Seize Terri']
Miami Herald ^ | Sat, Mar. 26, 2005 | CAROL MARBIN MILLER

Posted on 03/25/2005 7:55:28 PM PST by West Coast Conservative

Hours after a judge ordered that Terri Schiavo was not to be removed from her hospice, a team of state agents were en route to seize her and have her feeding tube reinserted -- but they stopped short when local police told them they would enforce the judge's order, The Herald has learned.

Agents of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement told police in Pinellas Park, the small town where Schiavo lies at Hospice Woodside, on Thursday that they were on the way to take her to a hospital to resume her feeding.

For a brief period, local police, who have officers at the hospice to keep protesters out, prepared for what sources called ``a showdown.''

In the end, the squad from the FDLE and the Department of Children & Families backed down, apparently concerned about confronting local police outside the hospice.

''We told them that unless they had the judge with them when they came, they were not going to get in,'' said a source with the local police.

''The FDLE called to say they were en route to the scene,'' said an official with the city police who requested anonymity. ``When the sheriff's department and our department told them they could not enforce their order, they backed off.''

The incident, known only to a few and related to The Herald by three different sources involved in Thursday's events, underscores the intense emotion and murky legal terrain that the Schiavo case has created. It also shows that agencies answering directly to Gov. Jeb Bush had planned to use a wrinkle in Florida law that would have allowed them to legally get around the judge's order. The exception in the law allows public agencies to freeze a judge's order whenever an agency appeals it.

Sounds like the people of Pinellas Park are sick of the story and just want it to go away.

"He even did what so many wanted, obey the court and send in state police."

But he did not free Terri from the grip of the strangler. Ero, he failed.

I think it was all a farce, a ruse, to appease the voters, and now the people know it.

Now I'm waiting for GWB to send in federal marshalls. I wonder if he has the cojones to free an innocent woman condemned to die a slow and painful death. Will he act like a leader or cower? We'll soon know in less than 24 hrs.

I have been here long enough to know that even if Jeb Bush did everything these Freepers wanted, he would enjoy no loyalty from them in the future.

I've been here a tad longer than you and I for one am not mad at Jeb Bush.

I am sorrowful for Jeb Bush because he was placed in a high position of power by God, assumed the associated responsibilities, and then turned from God's word in this instance. Read "1 Timothy" if you want more insight into Jeb's responsibilities before God.

That's very true, but a GOP that consists of only the Religous Right is a permanent minority party.

And you would be wrong. Speaking for myself. Which I'm capable of doing. And Terri might have been able to, also. If she had been given a chance.

Not everyone believes that GOD is responsible for every single thing that happens to everyone and everything, every moment of every single day, since HE created the world.

We are told, in the Bible, that we have free will. You don't believe in what's in the Bible then,if you believe that GOD is the author of every broken nail, cold, and action.

If GOD is really responsible for everything,as you say, then HE is responsible for murders and wanton rapes as well. Right? And following your logic, then GOD is the one who is responsible for Terri's tube to have been removed. It is GOD, then, whom you should be criticizing.

Jeb Bush is aware of all this, I'm sure (as is his legal team), but he says he does not have the legal authority to intervene. Randall Terry's own lawyer said Jeb Bush cannot legally intervene at this point.

They know something you don't, obviously.

The President or the Governor can write an executive order to get Terri into a hospital immediately. It is not breaking any law to do so. This action would not interfere with the judge. And since Greer already flaunted a Congressional subpoena his ruling is highly questionable.

Executive orders are lawful. They've been written by presidents ever since Washington on a number of different issues.

Contacting the president and ask him to write an executive order immediately. If you cannot reach him, then contact your state senators and representatives.

"Almost is NOT good enough."

Would you prefer cops shooting at cops in a showdown in the streets?

Up until yesterday, I would have supported this radical action.

And, it turns out, Jeb actually DID defy the court!

Way to go Jeb! But, he did the right thing by not letting them fight the local cops.

I am glad he stopped it then.

This is a horrible case. God be with the Schindlers. And may Michael feel in his soul the hurt he has caused.

So police officers should kill other police officers to try and save this woman's life. Odd how pro-life and pro-death can intermingle so readily...

Barbra Streisand!

But,IF you also believe that, then it is GOD who made Terri's life a living hell these past 15 years and is responsible for her being starved to death now.

yes exactly......no matter how emotionally we feel about the case, the minute we take the law into our own hands for our own ideological devices is when the real trouble starts....anarchy messes up many a picnic

And you would be wrong. Speaking for myself.

I've been here a long time, and I've seen a lot. I don't think I'm wrong, but if you say that in your specific case I am, then that's good.

But it should be discredited by the testimony of a friend of Terri who says that MS told her repeatedly that he did not know what Terri wanted him to do.
That negates MS testimony and the testimony of sis and bro in law are not really relevant because they are only in support of MS claim.
The basic problem is : hell bent on death Greer chose to believe what he wanted, and disregard everything else.

its clear that Micheal Schiavo has the police in his back pocket.......I heard today that the reason Greer put that injunction against the DCF was he got a heads up from Felos who got the heads up from the cops.....

go going cops...quid pro quo in affect , I guess.....

I spent over twenty years in a Florida police dept, but even if I did not have the knowledge and experience in that field to be able to comment from a been there done that prospective, I would still be able to smell this from 1000 miles away. It is obvious to someone that is paying the least bit of attention. Do some reading up on this and stop being hysterically on Michael Schiavo's side.
