NRA Leader Advocates Guns for Teachers
AP ^ | 3/25/05 | Arthur H. Rotstein

All options should be considered to prevent rampages like the Minnesota school shooting that took 10 lives -- including making guns available to teachers, a top National Rifle Association leader said Friday.

"I'm not saying that that means every teacher should have a gun or not, but what I am saying is we need to look at all the options at what will truly protect the students," the NRA's first vice president, Sandra S. Froman, told The Associated Press.

Gun-control restrictions would not have prevented Jeff Weise, 16, from killing nine people and himself Monday at Red Lake High School near Bemidji, Minn., said Froman, an attorney expected next month to be elected president of the NRA, which claims 4 million members.

The presence of an unarmed guard at the school failed to stop the siege, she noted.

"No gun law, no policy that you could implement now or that was already implemented, I think, could possibly prevent someone so intent on destruction," she said. "I think everything's on the table as far as looking at what we need to do to make our schools safe for our students."

Froman said if it is the responsibility of teachers to protect students in a school, "then we as a society, we as a community have to provide a way for the teachers to do that."

(remember this is in NYC)

That explains everything. Check with folks in RED states, especially the deep south. My teacher's handbook has detailed plans including code words for the public address system and drills for Colombine situations all the time.

WMD attacks of the type you specify would be more applicable in New York City rather than my area and that's a whole new topic and I'm gettin' sleepy. G'nite, all.

Typical Noo Yawker, thinking the Orange County Cowboys, er, cops are more competant with firearms than the average citizen.

While I agree with you that those without the will or the coordination could be of much help even when armed, the fact remains that ANYONE who is a law abiding citizen and a none mental defective should be allowed to carry in New York (like in 40 other states!), whether they be a teacher, stock broker or grocery clerk.

If only more ex-military went into teaching, it would make things much easier.

As grim as it sounds, the job of the cop who hangs around the local high school is to kill any kid who starts shooting.

Ummmmm NO. The job of community resource officers is to make a connection with kids so as to provide positive interactions as a sort of gang intervention program before it gets to that stage. They pick officers who are the most personable by their psych profiles. A lot of cops who volunteer for it just want to get off the street.

Have you ever seen the stats of police shootings? Most of them (about 95%) not including SWAT or the other special units can't hit the ground if they jumped from a window! That's why most police shooting quals are PASS/FAIL because they don't want the public to know that officer Callahan that just fired 45 rds (3 Beretta reloads) to stop the bad guy at 15 feet just barely qualified at the range on a static target.

Personally, I think that any law abiding, non-lunatic type person should be allowed to own a gun. The problem I have with carrying in NYC is what I like to think of as the "Moron Factor." The minute you get a lot of handguns floating around out there, you're going to get people leaving them in cabs and restaurants. You're going to get people without adequate training -- no, scratch that -- without adequate respect for a firearm playing around with them.

Israelis protect their schools with armed volunteers and precedent has been set here in the CONUS by the TSA allowing Armed Pilot program . It's in place to save the lives of lots of people.......what about the lives of lots of little people.......?

Allow the RKBA for CHL holders inside schools. IMHO The incidents in Red Lake or even Columbine would never have occurred or at the very least to a lesser extent had the wolves known that sheepdogs in the form of a few teachers, janitors, staff, principal, security etc were on duty.

Just my opinion of course......Stay Safe Soldier !

I've lived in Miami-Dade County, which has plenty of morons (many who moved from New York) and right-to-carry. Never had any problems.

The only people who seem to have a problem with shooting their pistols off when they shouldn't are NYPD greenhorns just out of the academy and project-dwelling Skells who purchase their .25 ravens with the serial number scratched off from the local dope dealers. Your average Joe Blow on Staten Island or Jill Yuppie on the Upper West Side will be OK with concealed carry. This Bronx/Long Island/Brooklyn now in Seattle boy has never left his 9mm in cabs or even unattended.

When concealed carry was passed in Florida, all the South Florida Democrat New York transplants stated some of the same concerns you had. Violent crime actually WENT DOWN instead.

BTW: In Florida and in Washington, you need to take a course in firearm safety before you can even apply for a concealed carry permit.

If it comes to that, then let's hope you're right. I never under-estimate the Moron Factor.

"Well, then, you prefer to kill everyone who disgarees with your position on firearms. I prefer to transform as many anti-gun-rights people as possible into allies..."

Geez, Newbie---learn to recognize humor. I "will" note that the particular fly "did" get swatted, because "it" WAS a newbie liberal troll. Evidently the mods agreed with me and not you.

Reference 103:

I would add two way radios on the Police department frequencies, kevlar vests and protective body armor, and ballistic riot shields to the inventory.

That way you could avoid friendly fire incidents, have better protection for the teachers than the attackers would probably have, and the ability to counter-attack and make gains.

Yeah, but it's reasonable. A DD214 honorable discharge or a Hunter Safety course will do, in Florida. If you're active military you can get a State of Washington permit and not even be a resident of Washington. I had one when I was at Fort Lewis.

You are correct on all counts.

Was the area around Fort Lewisa major center for Meth when you were there. It is now (although most of the manufacturing/dealing is kept away from the public eye).

Good grief, no! I lived in Tacoma off Bridgeport for awhile and then moved to a neat apt in Olympia and never had any problems. All the bad stuff was up on Federal Way, including the GREEN RIVER KILLER, lol.

After the Grenada Invasion (a buddy of mine in the 2nd Ranger was KIA on that one, another wounded) the Rangers came back and raised havoc because they had NO customs check at McChord AFB and they brought some ummmm "keepsakes" like Soviet hand grenades and LOTS of full auto AK's etc. So everytime little joe snuffy private Ranger got into a brawl downtown there might be a grenade rolled inside assuming the ranger lost the fight, which was not often.

Now after I left I heard a cool story that should have been made into a movie! Well, except for the lousy marksmanship. Anyway, apparently a sergeant from the Rangers was living offpost in a real DUMP right outside of McChord AFB and (I forget the name of the area) and it was loaded with dopers and gangbangers. So this sergeant decides he's the reincarnation of Sergeant York and he gathers together a fireteam from his squad and they ummmm "check out" a couple of SAW's M249 LMG's and some M4's and they put the word out to the noncombatants in the neighborhood to clear out for a weekend and they went to WAR. Apparently the resulting firefight had THOUSANDS of rounds expended but (get this) NO casualties on either side. I think the troops were given article 15's and booted from the battalion more from embarrassment than anything else.

Good plan, but one may have a hard time in some areas finding enough of, or any, teachers with those qualifications.
That's why my thought was to just to add full time security personnel.

I live and work in the most liberal school district in the State of Florida. At my last school there was a retired USAF "PJ" SpecOps guy, a retired Airborne Ranger who spent twelve years in a Ranger Battalion where the normal rotation is only three years, a retired Infantry Major and ME (fmr Infantry Captain/NRA Certified Firearms Instructor/IDPA Range Officer and competitor/former LEO). There are LOTS of folks all over who are qualified. They're just smart enough to keep a LOW profile in their systems because they're numbered by the liberals and liberal administrators might give them the crappy classes etc. I know, it's happened to me.

Well, the qualified teachers in my son's high school must be keeping a VERY low profile, because I am not aware of a one.

When I attended the same school 20+ years ago, my teachers included a USAF Reserve pilot, and several WWII veterans. The current staff is all the tolerance and diversity crowd.
