S.F. girls soccer team run-ins prompt ban on post-match high fives
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | March 23, 2005 | Phillip Matier and Andrew Ross

A series of ugly run-ins between girls soccer teams in San Francisco's high schools has prompted a ban on that proverbial act of good sportsmanship -- the post-game handshake. Not only that, but "all soccer players will be barred from saying a single word to their opponents, opposing coaches

I'm actually surprised they even allow any sort of competitiveness or games to be played in San Francisco these days,,,someone might get offended!

My thoughts exactly. Plus, think of the damage to those girls' self esteem on the losing teams.

"The competitiveness of many Americans these days stretches too far."

Ya wonder if the years of suppression of competition and PC crap that tries to create offensive free environments is leading to this. When people get the chance to let loose, they go all out. Eliminate the PC world, let people be themselves and these outbursts would become less frequent.

Well, I didn't cuss, I didn't raise my voice. But the objecting parent went back to his place along the sideline and remained silent - like a good San Franciscan parent.

"The competitiveness of many Americans these days stretches too far. To the point where they cannot compete or disagree without being enemies."

That is the whole point of competition among youths. The idea is to teach them how to compete with honor and respect for their opponents. It's not that Americans are TOO competitive, it's that they are not learning good sportsmanship. We shook the other team's hands when we won to show that we respected them and enjoyed the match, a dispay of sportsmanship. We shook hands with the winners when we lost to show respect and let the winners know we were not sore losers.

Competition is not bad. The way some people act while competing is.

"The whole purpose of soccer or sports is to have these kids learn to control their tempers under adversity, and we're going to cut that out?'' said veteran league referee Jan Leja. "What's the use of having sports?''

This ref has it right, as the above post indicates, if bad sportmanship is happening, cancel the games and the season until the teams and coaches can teach the right way to play sport. And the right way includes good sportsmanship after the game. Man I hate what the lef wing is doing in the SF Bay Area.

It would seem that the purpose is to create a, ignorant, emotionally unstable, and violent generation of incredibly spoiled kids. Such are easy for advertising and media to manipulate.

Nah, thats right out of some commie inspired handbook. Since the left wing knows for a certainty that communism does not work, why would they try for it in San Francisco? /sarc

They are using San Francisco as a test bench for destroying the family, by which to spread Gramscian communo-fascism across America. If you ask them why communism failed, they will tell you that it is because it wasn't global (I'm not kidding).

I always thought it was that it was not tried with "us" in charge. The only advantage to communism is for those in charge, and ever leftist believes in their own superior intellect, so it makes sense that they would figure that if only it was them making the decisions.

Of course the global idea is a good one, if communism were global then there would be no other alternative, so it is obvious that they have refine the answer from the one I gave. Much better to have an answer that can't be argued against.

With regard to teaching children sportsmanship, I believe it was the tennis player Bjorn Borg who recounted that, as a child, he had a terrible temper and would slam his racket and carry on whenever things didn't go his way. His parents took away his tennis racket and told him he could play again when he demonstrated some sportsmanship. That solved the problem in a hurry.

They probably don't keep score. Like the peewee games where only the parents and kids keep score, not the officials. So as there are no losers of course!

"For years, I have thought it was superficial," said Lowell High coach Ernie Feibusch, who has been coaching soccer for nearly 40 years.

I agree. We didn't do it. Some individuals may have visited with others on the opposing team but we just generally picked up our stuff and headed for the locker room or bus, winners and losers.

If you teach proper values things happen naturally. Liberals don't trust us to do the right thing so they mandate values and actions (PC), and we end up with this kind of thing.

Yes, I coached soccer in an SF Bay Area high school for ten years. We would have gone to the coach of a team with unsportsmanlike players after the game and expected to see issues resolved by the following year. As far as unsportsmanlike play, the refs have the yellow and red cards for this, and an important aspect of the game is being taught when these cards are used.

If I personally saw unsportsmanlike play or post play on the part of my players, they would find that this was not an acceptable aspect of the sport, or they would have been gone.
