it is worth remembering that the excruciating slowness of the execution here, the incremental-ness of death, is designed by its champions to inure us to it. After the first hour, the second passes with far less fanfare, and the third less still. I've been following this closely, and I needed to remind myself today how many hours Terri Schiavo has actually been without sustenance by counting the days since Friday afternoon and multiplying by 24. How much more easily the time passes, and the world around us changes, for those following only fleetingly, or not at all.
Why should we think this is intentional? Consider, say, a month ago, before Terri's plight took center stage, if you had asked someone in the abstract: "How would you feel about starving and dehydrating a defenseless, brain-damaged woman?" The answer is easy to imagine: "Outrageous, atrocious -- something that wouldn't be done to an animal and couldn't be done to the worst convicted murderer."
But then it actually happens ... slowly. You're powerless to stop it, and ... you find your life goes on. There are kids and jobs and triumphs and tragedies and everyday just-getting-by. An atrocity becomes yet another awful thing going on in the world. After a day, or maybe two, of initial flabbergast, we're talking again about social security reform, China, North Korea, Hezbollah, etc. A woman's snail-like, gradual torture goes from savagery to just one of those sad facts of life. As is the case with other depravities once believed unthinkable, it coarsens us. We slowly, and however reluctantly, accept it. We accept it. The New York Times no doubt soon "progresses" from something like "terminating life by starvation," to "the dignity of death by starvation," to "the medical procedure that opponents refer to as starvation." And so the culture of life slides a little more. The culture of death gains a firmer foothold.
Of course, the physical needs of the body are not limited to food and water. There is also air. But no judge, even in Florida, would ever have had the nerve in Terri's case to permit "the medical procedure that opponents refer to as asphyxiation." Too crude. Too quick. Too obviously murder of a vulnerable innocent. Brazen, instant savagery might wake us from our slumber. For the culture of death, better that we sleep.
Wouldn't it be nice if the cops outside her room bring her drinks with straws, if they get caught, there would be a HUGE bru-ha-ha and IMAGINE how much money would be donated to the FOP to pay for their lawyers. Just a thought.
Florida does have a Good Samaritan Law.
Tonight, a woman lies dying in Florida. By her husband's orders she is slowly being starved to death. He will not even allow ice chips in her mouth to ease her suffering. The courts and therefore THE LAW have sanctioned this barbarism, just as once they did back-flips to justify and institutionalize slavery.
But a strange thing is happening again. The death watch for Terri Schiavo is bringing together people from all over the country, even all over the world, to stand in solemn witness to her right to life. As each hour ticks by and the end draws nearer more and more consciences will be examined, more and more conversions made, more mystic chords touched. Her passing will stir this nation, and her moldering remains will give life to the Truth.
The end is inevitable. The Culture of Death is on trial and no earthly court can save it now.
Abortion laws have depleted our right to condemn any one for anything. We slaughter the most innocent members of society by the millions and toss them into garbage bags.

I can't either. I also can't stop the tears that keep filling up my eyes.
It shames and horrifies me that the gov't of the US is doing this. It means that those of us who "go along to get along" are complicit in evil - like the cops "guarding" Terri so no one can save her.
What is the solution? What is the remedy? I know prayer, and I keep praying during the day, on and off, as are no doubt tens of thousands of even millions of people.
But at some point action will have to be taken, or no one will be safe from the state sponsored and mandated killing.
Very true. This is absolutely making me SICK! I am hitting the "refresh" button on Drudge CONSTANTLY to see when something breaks. I can't sleep and I have a huge test tomorrow...(i'm a college student)
And just how does our President intervene (legally)??
This judge is cruel.
Rule one way or the other, but rule! He is executing her by neglect.
He should be impeached for dereliction resulting in cruel and inhumane treatment.
May God forgive the United States of America.
I don't know...maybe he should ask Slick Willy Clintoon for some tips on how to get away with doing shady tasks.
I don't know that Bush can do anything. If we are a nation of laws, we can only use the existing system.
If she is successfully murdered, I hope we can find a strategy to reverse the satanic decline this country is in.
He won't. We won't escape the tribulation. America won't repent. Free handouts buy votes, and those votes support the principalities we're trying to battle.
Perhaps some writ of mandate forcing the judge to act? Perhaps some executive order to keep her alive until the judge acts?
The judges inaction is action in this case. He refusal to rule is a ruling causing cruel death.
There must be a legal remedy to prevent a judge from neglecting his duty when it results in death.
What do you recommend he do? In my book...he has done more than ever expected in my eyes. Getting Congress and the Senate to meet and pass a bill on vacation in record time...Bush did his best imo.
I saw who I believe was the family's priest tonight say Michael Schiavo turned down his request for him to sit next to Terri as she dies,, what a guy,,,,,,,,,
