Mother pleads for Terri Schiavo's life

MITCH STACY

Associated Press

PINELLAS PARK, Fla. - Hanging their hopes on a last-minute compromise in Congress, Terri Schiavo's parents notified her hospice to prepare to have her feeding tube reinserted on Sunday, her third day without food or water.

Congressional leaders from both parties hoped an agreement reached on a bill would allow the tube to be restored while federal courts review her case. The House and Senate were expected to take up the legislation by Sunday or early Monday. If passed, President Bush planned to sign it.

But Mary Schindler pleaded for parents nationwide to call their congressional representatives and pressure them to vote for a bill to prolong her daughter's life.

"There are some congressmen that are trying to stop this bill," she said outside her daughter's hospice. "Please don't use my daughter's suffering for your own personal agenda."

SNIP

Rep. Robert Wexler, D-Fla., issued a statement late Saturday saying he will make an objection that would stop the vote Sunday. Any member can demand that a majority of members be present to do business. Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., said he was trying to gather enough votes to defeat the bill Monday

You can have any point of view you want here. But expect your point of view to be challenged too. If someone acts like a clown, I may call them a clown on rare occasions like this.

This does not belong in the legislature. This is a family matter. You mean to tell me that all 19 judges are corrupt in this case?

Reporter on CSPAN : 5 Democrats will object to the bill today. Forcing another 24 hour wait.

CSPAN is saying that, if any member objects to this Sunday session vote, the vote is suspended until the next work day (Monday).

If suspended, DeLay says he will then call for the vote on Monday at 12:01 a.m.

The internal workings of no family would ever be safe from Congress again.

Precisely, what are you talking about? Since when does any family have the "right" to take the life of another based on questionable evidence of her wishes? In my opinion this is about an individual's right to self determination.

...if the government isn't going to let her live then for the sake of some shred of human dignity give her a shot of something to kill her and put her out of her misery.

That made me sick when I heard it. Why not just vote? I am so mad I could make a sailor blush right now!

Under the rules if anyone objects to the bill they must postpone until Monday. Here is what will probably happen:

1) A FL Dem will object
2) They will recess until Monday
3) They will try to vote again at 12:01am
4) There will not be enough congressmen there for a vote
5) We wait until later Monday, then the Senate will have
a bill passed by the House to vote on

If we are lucky, Terri's tube will be reinstated late Monday.

Not necessarily corrupt, but they are all marginally competent and they have made an appalling series of mistakes in this case. The judges show a serious lack of concern for finding the truth in this case.

"Reporter on CSPAN : 5 Democrats will object to the bill today. Forcing another 24 hour wait."

It isn't a 24 hour wait. Just not allowed to vote during 'special session'. Monday at 12:01am would work (if enough congressmen are present).

It was right where it belonged in the court. And to go on and trash the husband doesnt help either. As far as I know he has not really gone public. It is her parents who decided to have a pr war. We do not know everything!! In a ideal situation he would be at her bedside all the time. Real life does not work that way. From what I understand most of the money is gone anyway.

The Constitution speaks of one's right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. If someone's life and liberty isn't a meaningful purpose to defend, then I don't know what is.

I do understand your concern about precedent. This case, though, is without precedent. The purposeful desire to end nutrition and hydration for a disabled person is perverted in the extreme. This is Dr. Mengle-like behaviour.
