Mother pleads for Terri Schiavo's life

MITCH STACY

Associated Press

PINELLAS PARK, Fla. - Hanging their hopes on a last-minute compromise in Congress, Terri Schiavo's parents notified her hospice to prepare to have her feeding tube reinserted on Sunday, her third day without food or water.

Congressional leaders from both parties hoped an agreement reached on a bill would allow the tube to be restored while federal courts review her case. The House and Senate were expected to take up the legislation by Sunday or early Monday. If passed, President Bush planned to sign it.

But Mary Schindler pleaded for parents nationwide to call their congressional representatives and pressure them to vote for a bill to prolong her daughter's life.

"There are some congressmen that are trying to stop this bill," she said outside her daughter's hospice. "Please don't use my daughter's suffering for your own personal agenda."

SNIP

Rep. Robert Wexler, D-Fla., issued a statement late Saturday saying he will make an objection that would stop the vote Sunday. Any member can demand that a majority of members be present to do business. Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., said he was trying to gather enough votes to defeat the bill Monday

There is an old proverb that hard cases make bad law.

This would set a precedent that no state court decision - even those on purely state matters - would ever be safe from the will of congress. And no family would ever be safe from the will of Congress.

That's a really, really bad precedent. It means further erosion of the Constitution. Remember "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."? Well, you put a big nail in the heart of that amendment and of state's rights in general if this federal intervention happens.

The internal workings of no family would ever be safe from Congress again. Think real hard about that. One day Congress wil be Democrat again. You want them to have that kind of power? Can you think of how they would abuse it?

I'm sorry, but a Constitutional loss on this scale is not worth one life, no matter how sympathetic it might be.

You've topped me there. I'll have to see your raise and then we'll show all the cards. It's difficult to see humor on a day like this, but that's a good post.

The law states that Terry's wishes are to be carried out. Do you honestly believe that she would want to be maintained in this sad state? If she is a Christian, she will be with God. That's far better than being trapped in a crippled husk of a body, even if her well-meaning parents are willing to visit her every day.

I think we should all take names of all that act like Wexler and Kennedy---I saw a black woman rep on Fox awhile ago, really angry, saying that "they" never even asked the democrats--

Bull-there were all kinds of democrats there in the House and in the Senate, Senator Conrad (D) was one of the leading senators calling for this bill---

If there's not a majority of members, someone's going to object and that will be the end of it, until and unless they can pull a majority of members back from their Spring recess.

If you think about it, I don't believe we should be pushing for Congressional action that doesn't involve a majority. It's a bad precedent, no matter how you feel about this situation.

Too bad Greer had to be so inept in the exercize of his power and freedom.

Those who continue to misuse their freedom are ultimately doomed to lose it.

No surprises here.
First, they can`t stand to see a liberal court,in this case the renegade Fla. judicial system, being challenged.
Second, and most telling as to who and what the dems are, they automatically support anything that undermines the social fabric of our great American culture.

Their religion of humanism and their political system of socialism/Marxism both depend on humans in power(them)judging a persons life based on their definition of quality not Gods sanctity.
To support innocent life, born or unborn, flies in the face of their creed, which is them, the self anointed in the position of playing god.

The Democrat Party have proven over and over that they are a party of death to the innocents whether unborn or now handicap, sanctuary to the criminals, advocate for our enemies, and protector to minorities and the poor as long as they know their places. Oh yes, every year that passes, the democrat party's true face comes out. Only the useful idiots are too blind to see especially when it is thrown in their faces by the Democrat Party themselves.

This is a crystal ball look into the future. This is what we get when as a society we no longer value human life. It is no longer convenient for Terri Schivo's "Husband" to have her around. He has moved on to his new honey and family, so this other babe is a problem.

I pray for this poor woman and her parents, they wish to take care of her. I wish Michael Schivo would let them. I think that would be the honorable thing for him to do.

You're post makes no sense whatsoever. You state that "no family would ever be safe from the will of Congress," but this case as it stands would set a far more dangerous precedent that no family would ever be safe from a single state court judge who can order the death by starvation of a family member. Who is more likely to make an outrageous and dangerous decision....a single state court judge or the entire US Congress? The answer is obvious when you look at all the corrupt decisions made over the decades by individual judges: one judge is much more likely to destroy a family than the entire congress.

That said, it's always very important to elect the right people to congress so they don't enact damaging legislation. That's democracy and there's no way around the need to get involved and elect good people to congress.

If that slick-haired fruitloop actually fulfills his threat, I'd hate to be in his shoes on Monday.

Well, shame on me. I forgot to consider that vipers have feelings too. I suppose I'll be sentenced to serpent sensitivity training.

Nevertheless, Wexler is lower than a snake's belly in a wagon rut, lower than whale poop, and lower than a crocodile's solid waste emission organ in the bottom of a slime pond.

I could not have said it better myself. The Federal legislature has no business in this matter. Every body complains about how these people have too much power from the judiciary to the people in both houses. We are going to rue the day if this law passes. I feel for her mom and dad, however, they brought this public and now it is totally out of control. This case has been going on for years!!!! Let her go. 19 judges have heard this case not one or two but 19!!! The spouse is the next of kin period and he is not the one who brought this out.
