Mother pleads for Terri Schiavo's life

MITCH STACY

Associated Press

PINELLAS PARK, Fla. - Hanging their hopes on a last-minute compromise in Congress, Terri Schiavo's parents notified her hospice to prepare to have her feeding tube reinserted on Sunday, her third day without food or water.

Congressional leaders from both parties hoped an agreement reached on a bill would allow the tube to be restored while federal courts review her case. The House and Senate were expected to take up the legislation by Sunday or early Monday. If passed, President Bush planned to sign it.

But Mary Schindler pleaded for parents nationwide to call their congressional representatives and pressure them to vote for a bill to prolong her daughter's life.

"There are some congressmen that are trying to stop this bill," she said outside her daughter's hospice. "Please don't use my daughter's suffering for your own personal agenda."

SNIP

Rep. Robert Wexler, D-Fla., issued a statement late Saturday saying he will make an objection that would stop the vote Sunday. Any member can demand that a majority of members be present to do business. Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., said he was trying to gather enough votes to defeat the bill Monday

even with all that we do "know" there is SO much to this story that we are not seeing. the media is puting her to death just as much as that judge is, or more.

Let's not go down that road .. They are just reporting the news

"If I were even reasonably convinced that she had expressed those wishes I would not favor Congressional intervention.
That's the problem, isn't it. No one knows what she wants for certain. And, in that twilight of uncertainty, the Congress is contemplating removal of the most basic right of an individual, to determine ones fate or provide for a person who you wish to determine for you."

Ok then, take it away from her husband. Rule on the facts and then decide. Her husband and the grudge against Bush is the biggest issues in this case, but it should be about Terri alone.
I don't know what's the best thing to do here, but I can say with all that is in me that her husband should not be given the power to decide. Take it out of his hands.

Who should have the power? Terri.
How will she get the power? Give her theropy.
What if it fails?
Hear the case again, but after ample time to see if she can recover or not recover with NEW facts.

Beeline, below is a link to an affidavit by a nurse named Carla Sauer Iyer, R.N. who cared for Terri at one time. She does not have anything good to say about Michael and the care given to Terri.

I have a little story to tell you. My son Timmy died in 1992 from septis due to his leukemia. Well, a university called me some where from the mid west. Anyway, they wanted to send a medical student who was studying here from Japan to ask me cultural questions about how americans vs japanese parents or loved ones on how they react to illness and death of a loved one. It was very interesting. Apparently, now remember this is 1992, the japanese would never discuss the illness with the ill person nor tell them that they were going to die, vs most americans who are honest with their loved one. It just not something that is discussed there. They would keep the illness and the ramifications from the person.

not the news reporters... but where are the 20/20 investigations , the behind-the-scenes reports, the life investigations we are so used to seeing? i supposed it'll have to wait until after she dies.

Not faulting him for trying, but at this point, anybody in Terri's corner has to know how hard the leftists are going to be pushing the "brain dead" lie. He needs to be prepared for that.

I have no problem with that. I agree that it is very disconcerting to say the least he will not consent to that. To me, it would be the right thing to do. I must conceed that.

He sure is.

I was thinking while watching him that he's the kind of doctor I would be happy to find. Seems very compassionate.

Did you just here that the Senate will pass a unanimous consent bill for Terri this afternoon?

They also said that the house will debate for three hours tonight and vote at 12:01 am----

I guess this means that Kennedy caved, huh? But, those dem reps at the presser this morning will prolly still try to block this, don't you think?

Should be some interesting TV viewing tonight---

AND the fact that Michael Schiavo has stuck out his middle finger to the world and the Schindlers and denied them visitation rights, means that it is MORE imperative to get this settled tonight--

What kind of "person" would deny his "wife" sustenance one day, and the love of her family the next?

Now, I dare anyone on this website to defend Schiavo's actions today--kicking her family out!

Well, then I guess the threat to get kicked off is not anything to be afraid of then?

Latest I heard is that at 9 pm the House will convene, debate for 3 hours, then vote at 12:01 am.

Terri may not make it very long though, since she now has a bad infection and high fever.

Combine that with no hydration, and probably no antibiotics, it's unlikely she will last much longer.

Now also it's been reported that the estranged husband is no longer allowing the family into her room for visits.

So they can't even be with her as she dies.

This could all be settled if Michael would just divorce Terri. He is just using his marriage contract to control Terri - in essence, to kill her - the marriage vows mean nothing to him. Truly a heartbreaking situation for Terri and her parents. I just hope and pray the Federal judicial reveiw called for by Congress can give the parents some rights, but the way our judiciary is, I don't hold out much hope.

Try not to take it personally. Your point is controversial, and as such, is going to attract arguments to the contrary. It doesn't hurt to listen. If others believe that you are not up to date on the case, they will try to inform you. I know, some of those comments may be crabby, but some -- most, I hope -- are made with good will, even if they do not agree with your own view.

Cheers!

There is an old proverb that hard cases make bad law.

Judges aren't supposed to make *any* law. That is for the legislature and that is the problem.

This would set a precedent that no state court decision - even those on purely state matters - would ever be safe from the will of congress. And no family would ever be safe from the will of Congress.

At the moment no family is safe from the courts bent on coddling terrorists and criminals, micromanaging education and the workplace, creating gay marriages and on and on. Right now your state legislature and Congress doesn't matter. All the decisions in your life are coming from courts. Don't get it mixed up with federalism. The problem to be addressed NOW is separation of powers at both the federal and state levels.

That's a really, really bad precedent. It means further erosion of the Constitution.

Right now THERE IS NO CONSTITUTION, only the whims of courts that have been wreaking havoc over and over and haven't been questioned since Andrew Jackson.
