Mother pleads for Terri Schiavo's life

MITCH STACY

Associated Press

PINELLAS PARK, Fla. - Hanging their hopes on a last-minute compromise in Congress, Terri Schiavo's parents notified her hospice to prepare to have her feeding tube reinserted on Sunday, her third day without food or water.

Congressional leaders from both parties hoped an agreement reached on a bill would allow the tube to be restored while federal courts review her case. The House and Senate were expected to take up the legislation by Sunday or early Monday. If passed, President Bush planned to sign it.

But Mary Schindler pleaded for parents nationwide to call their congressional representatives and pressure them to vote for a bill to prolong her daughter's life.

"There are some congressmen that are trying to stop this bill," she said outside her daughter's hospice. "Please don't use my daughter's suffering for your own personal agenda."

SNIP

Rep. Robert Wexler, D-Fla., issued a statement late Saturday saying he will make an objection that would stop the vote Sunday. Any member can demand that a majority of members be present to do business. Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., said he was trying to gather enough votes to defeat the bill Monday

So it's okay to starve my old dad to death?

Well, he does have Alzheimer's and he can't make an cogent reply to anything at all, but see, he told me a long time ago that he didn't want to live that way, I swear.

Now, don't worry about my inheritance, or the fact that there is absolutely nothing written.
I am his closest living relative, so those other relatives that want him to live don't count worth snot, and the government has no business protecting him either.

Just kill the bastard.

Without the wishes being in writing, the decision should be with life, not death.

Quite a few hours? What if you had to stand by and watch him die slowly of starvation and dehydration for days, some say between 10 days and even as much as 30 days. Could you have done that?

>>>The precedent I see being set here is that, if you are incapacitated without a living will, the default rule is that you must be sustained indefinitely as long as some person in your family willing to remain involved in your care<<<

What is so wrong with that? Isn't that the humane thing to do without a living will stating other wise?

Goodness, the desire of some people wanting to kill off this woman instead of having her parents and siblings take over her care boogles my mind.

"Not enough of it when she had her heart attack."

I just read an article link posted on one of these threads that said "Heart Attack" was never diagnosed. The enzymes never showed she had a heart attack. They did say that she "Possibly" had some potassium lowering.

Sorry I was not clear in what I said I realise that this is not his specialty but he would have a better understanding than the average man in the street plus he obviously has contacts that can advise him better than they could a non medical man and therefore he is able to put over in laymen terms better than the average Senator because he come from a certain amount of knowledge.

Sorry about your son but at least you could make the decision Terri's parents cannot and this at the end of day is what is is all about should a man shacked up with another women make a decision over loving parents who would love to take her home.

What's ironic here is that this situation exposes the degree to which judicial activism has destroyed court legitimacy in this country.

The American people would give much more sympathy to this federalism / states' rights argument if they hadn't experienced decision after decision of bs liberal activism on the courts.

My question is whether the husband was a nurse at the time of the heart attack?

I don't think so.

Michael also told the court he wanted to become a nurse so he could help his wife for as long as she lived.

If Terri had truly not wanted to live she would be dead by now with everything she has gone through.

Exactly. You can't keep alive a person who wants to die.

Wanted to post a copy of an email I just sent to Govenor Jeb Bush. I am killing myself contacting everyone I know. I hope Congressman Wexler of Florida knows he will probably not stay in his post come the next election....nevertheless....To all - I have no words to express the way I am feeling. I pray we are all together in spirit and prayer - and suggest that at the time Congress reconvenes - we enter a moment of prayer together for Terri, for the Fmaily, and that Congress will do their job.

I have been listening to some of the callers on C-span, who obviously know nothing of this case, as we FReepers have been keeping up on this. Some of their remarks are an amazing tribute to the under education of the general Public.

Amazing...at 2:00p.m.Eastern Standard Time - lets all pray together, for Terri's sake. JK

(email to Govenor Bush)

...I found it strange that he cannot be reached by email unless you are writing as a citizen of Florida. I entered my zipcode and received a message that I was not able to enter that domain.

I wanted to let you know of a comment he made moments ago on C-span: He stated Terri has been in a vegatative state, but has communicated her wishes to die. How is that possible? Does this not follow Democratic 'doublespeak'?

We all know this is not about Terri. This is another case of the Democratic 'sacred cow' of pro-choice being put in a possibly precarious position. If those who cannot speak for themselves are given a voice - what will happen to pro-choice?

Thank you for being a 'reachable person'. Kimberly. P.S. Can't even get through to C-span to voice my opinion. Thank God for email!

You can believe it because you want to - but there is no proof in the positive for your "belief" and EVERY proof (including Terri's own responses to her parents and conversations) that she is not a vegetable and IS living and wants to live. WE should not kill her - worse than a dog - to starve her to death, no water for weeks. Have you forgotten Stephen Hawkings? Coma patients who say they were always aware but could not move? Did you know that Terri tried to speak last week? A congresswoman (I think that is right) told her - Terri, if you could just say "I want to live" all this would be over. Terri cried out "I waaaaa, I waaaa" before the police removed the woman.

The press doesn't want to cover this any more that they wanted to tell the truth about Saddam's evil, or abortion, or the Swift boat vets, or Ronald Reagans' greatness, or Clintons' excesses.

It is understandable to imagine a situation one way, but after you have gotten facts which show it to be different, to disprove your theory, it is pride and folly not to revise your position.

>> The law states that Terry's wishes are to be carried out

You're too late. There hasn't been any law in this case. If you start now, you're going to get Felos, Bushnell, Schiavo and Greer into a heap of trouble.

It is Michael's wishes that have been imposed all along, not Terri's. She didn't "wish" to be denied therapy and medicine. She didn't "wish" to have the funds awarded for her care embezzled by lawyers. She didn't "wish" to be stuck away in a dark room and never see the sunshine. She didn't "wish" for the hospice to throw out her religious medallions and birthday cards. She didn't "wish" to be denied visitation from her family. Terri's wishes don't mean one bleeping thing to her estranged, cheating husband or to Judge Greer, or to "the law."

The "law" -- on the order of Judge Greer -- wouldn't even allow Terri to receive holy communion the last time they took away her water and food. Terri is a devout Catholic. Her right to free exercise of her religion is guaranteed in the First Amendment. Nevertheless, Judge Greer flouted her wishes and took away her most personal and private spiritual rights.

These dems have NO idea what the he** they're even talking about! Terri is NOT terminal, her "illness" has not reached a "futile" stage; she would live for YEARS with the feeding tube inserted. She's "brain damaged," NOT "brain dead," for God's sake!!

From what I understand if and WHEN this bill passes, the federal court will "start from scratch" regarding her medical status -- previous records will not be in play (I THINK that's what I heard) -- She needs to be able to take advantage of more advanced medical technology. She's had NO medical testing, other than CT scan, MANY years ago... she's had infections that the HINO refused to treat (but she LIVED thru them!); and she went at least 6 days with no food/hydration 2 years ago -- and LIVED thru it. I think Terri has said loud and clear that she WANTS TO LIVE.

Listening to these idiots speaking right now is making me physically ill. How would they feel if Terri were THEIR loved one? Would they be so quick to condemn her to death, only because she can't feed herself???? Then again, they're democrats... they have no heart.

Many powerful prayers going up for Terri and her family today...

Dear G_d, what an awful question. I don't know. I can only say for myself, and that's all anyone can say.

For me, I love my wife and family. If I have no chance of recovery, I want them to get on with their lives, and for my wife, that includes the possibility of new love. Because I love her and want her happiness. For my parents, I love them too and don't want to be the burden I would certainly be both emotionally and financially.

So to answer your question...for myself, yeah...let me go meet my maker.
