Mother pleads for Terri Schiavo's life

MITCH STACY

Associated Press

PINELLAS PARK, Fla. - Hanging their hopes on a last-minute compromise in Congress, Terri Schiavo's parents notified her hospice to prepare to have her feeding tube reinserted on Sunday, her third day without food or water.

Congressional leaders from both parties hoped an agreement reached on a bill would allow the tube to be restored while federal courts review her case. The House and Senate were expected to take up the legislation by Sunday or early Monday. If passed, President Bush planned to sign it.

But Mary Schindler pleaded for parents nationwide to call their congressional representatives and pressure them to vote for a bill to prolong her daughter's life.

"There are some congressmen that are trying to stop this bill," she said outside her daughter's hospice. "Please don't use my daughter's suffering for your own personal agenda."

SNIP

Rep. Robert Wexler, D-Fla., issued a statement late Saturday saying he will make an objection that would stop the vote Sunday. Any member can demand that a majority of members be present to do business. Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., said he was trying to gather enough votes to defeat the bill Monday

I would guess that 9 out of 10 people "would not like to live like a vegetable." That leads me to logically infer there is 90% chance Terry's wishes are being carried out.

Neither do I. I want the state to protect my right to determine my own fate.

I agree 100%. I determine that my wife has that right and I do not, under any circumstances relinquish that right to any government body, period.

Can you at least see my point in that if the feds are allowed to overrule the rights of a spouse in this case, they can overrule them in ALL cases. Which brings back that "nightmare" of the govt. seizing the "rights" to all comatose patients and using them as Guinea pigs or organ banks or blood donors, etc.....As THEY see fit.

Starvation isn't going to kill her. Dehydration is going to kill her.

If Terri had truly not wanted to live she would be dead by now with everything she has gone through. The fact she is still alive proves to me her will to live.

Precisely. And having this particular display of democrats lecture to me about the sanctity of marriage, is absolutely nauseating

Especially since michael schiavo has a mistress and two children from that mistress.

he is shacked up with another woman and has 2 kids by her

Exactly! And for the WIFE BEATER Moran to lecture ANYONE on what should happen to a spouse is almost hysterical if it wasn't so sad!

No joke. This whole thing is so twisted. The plaintiff and federal judge would be going too far if they took Terri out back and shot her, but starving her to death is perfectly acceptable. What kind of whacked point of view is that?

I'd be in jail if I treated my livestock like this.

God Bless Senator Frist I pray that the other Senators really take heed of what he has said her is a qualified doctor and knows what he is talking about.

I gave that right to my wife and she to me. She is the only one who really knows my wishes and mine hers.

Hmmmm, wonder if you'd feel the same if, after receiving a large amount of money because of your condition, your wife ran off and found herself a new honey, had a couple of kids by him, refused to allow you to have any therapy that might help you recover, rufused to allow your doctors to do an MRI, and stood to gain another large amount of money as soon as you die?

You obviously haven't been to many hospices, nursing homes or independent living centers.

Didn't know that about Moran but that makes it even more ridiculous at the end of day the parents want to take care of her let them.

I only hope that on election day everyone remembers their names and on judgement day God remembers!

Alas, the people won't remember. These members are in "safe" districts and for all practical purposes as much beyond the reach of the people as are the entrenched judges like George W. Greer. Greer is clearly winning.

The precedent I see being set here is that, if you are incapacitated without a living will, the default rule is that you must be sustained indefinitely as long as some person in your family willing to remain involved in your care.

There is usually a strong will to live no matter their condition.

If I recall in Mort Kondracke story about his wife Milly

She stated that she didn't want to have a feeding tube should that time come

And when that time came .. she changed her mind and had a feeding tube inserted

I have the wife/nurse next to me watching this stuff on Fox and her first question is why a young woman had a heart attack in the first place? Her parents are obviously healthy and long lived.

My question is whether the husband was a nurse at the time of the heart attack?

I believe Wexler is representing someone right now. The Devil.

Terri dies, they are murderers. It is that simple.

The federal government has absolutely no business intervening in this.

What the hell is Jeb Bush doing? Is he on life support?
