The true model AK-47 (as opposed to the press family of rifles SKS and the like being labeled as AK-47) is a fully automatic firearm and as such has been banned, "from the streets" since the 1930's. Class III FFL is the only way to legally possess an AK-47. Dealers for law enforcement purchases and serious collectors are the only folks I know of with Class III. Lots of paperwork, money, scrutiny and renewals.
Can't get much more government control than with an outright ban and heavy regulation of the industry supplying law enforcement.
The point here is not the weapon, but the act. Usually, automatic fire on the streets is intended to murder and is indicative of other serious criminal activities.

Thank you for addressing this. I posed the question in my post #89...

MJ is certainly one strange dude -- what he did to his face is insane.

because I don't get my panties in a wad over restricting access to AK-47's and rocket launchers I'm automatically no different in my views than Sarah Brady, Al Gore, or the DU. Do you think machine guns should be legal?

Any one of the three hundred and fifty million firearms in this country could have done the very same thing with the very same result. When will you people stop blaming objects and start putting the blame on the perpetrator where it belongs. Guns don't shoot people unless told to.

I don't know exactly where the line should be drawn, so I obviously I'm not going to advocate specifics. Originally I was against the AWB extension, primarily because I didn't trust the original writers and backers of it, and from what I've read it was excessive, overly broad, and a perfect venue for future abuse of gun rights. But I also don't get worked up if some machine guns or virtual equivalents do get restricted. And the more I read rants from raving "Don't you dare ban my right to nukes" purist-types, the more I think perhaps opposing the AWB extension might have been the wrong move. Maybe, maybe not.

It's nice to be on your side on an issue, unlike the WOD threads.

Nope, and from what I've read, they aren't.

I would love to see immense gun control Well remind me that if we ever have the opportunity to meet and your life is threatened in my presence not to use my LEGAL firearm to protect you. I wouldn't want to upset you by using something you find so distasteful to protect you. I'll just call 911 and give the police a description of your killers.

You realize that full auto AK's are already extremely restricted I hope. In all likelyhood, if this was an AK style it was semi-auto. I'm sure you can't come up with a good reason to ban those.

Carrick's kind of between the South Side and Brentwood (at least that's the route taken by the Carrick 51C bus!). I believe Brentwood Blvd. is the main street through there.

Nope, and from what I've read, they aren't.You are correct. Now why do you want to ban a semi-automatic weapon such as the AK-47, but keep fully automatic weapons legal? I honestly don't see the logic here.
There are several weapons much more destructive than the AK-47 which are legal. What are your feelings on attempted bans of .50's?

He'll have to go to court. We just won't be able to execute him. Even if he is a multiple murdering sociopath with no hope of rehabilitation.
If anything, that is yet one more reason for every single law abiding citizen to carry at all times. Shoot these scum bag predators so we don't have to rely on political activist judges releasing them back into society.
