Free Annual Credit Report - Really! (Vanity)
Congressional flyer ^ | Mar 7, 2005 | Me

Posted on 03/07/2005 1:37:51 PM PST by tang-soo

I just received in the mail a flyer from my Congressman - Pat Tiberi of Columbus, Ohio. At first I thought this some political stuff and started to toss it. Then I read more carefully and thought this was pretty good. It said that a free credit report was now available to citizens of the state of Ohio.

It looks like they are ramping up by bringing some states online over a period of time. According to the flyer, Congress has passed legislation that states we are entitled to a free credit report once a year from each of the three main reporting agencies (transunion, equifax and I can't remember the name of the third). It suggests to stagger the three agencies throughout the year for more maximum effectiveness.

I thought I would post this in case you may not be aware that your state is available. Or that you have not yet been notified (or you did like I almost did and tossed the notice in the round file cabinet).

You do have to supply your SSN, but the interface states that its usage is encrypted.

By the way, this really is free and not like that radio commercial that implies a service that sounds free but in reality charges a fee. I won't honor them by stating their name here.

The web site is http://www.annualcreditreport.com/

TOPICS: Business/Economy; Government
KEYWORDS: creditreport; free
Hope this helps.

It's not free for everyone, according to their FAQ it's only free if your state has laws that allow for free credit reports. (Colorado, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Vermont) The site told me that I had to purchase mine for almost $10. That's not Free.

One word of warning. Getting your credit report isn't really free. According to my realtor brother, everytime you or someone else checks your credit report, it lowers your credit score. Use this "right" carefully and infrequently or you may have a problem.

No! annualcreditreport.com is correct. I have already visited the site and received a copy of my credit report. It gives you a choice of obtaining a report from 3 different organizations.

Not if it's for a mortgage.

You can have 5 checks from mortgage companies per month and it won't affect your score. (or so I'm told by several different mortgage companies).

This is to allow the consumer to shop for loan rates when purchasing a home.

This doesn't count against your inquiries since you are doing it yourself. I've already checked mine and my husbands on Transunion. I'll wait a couple of months and do the other one and then a few months later, do the last one. All of the info was correct on mine. That's because we refinance our home in November and found out all of my sons bad debt was being reported on my husbands report. Took a few calls to clean it up.

all that really doesn't matter. what REALLY will hurt your credit is filling out an ap for a credit card and getting turned down. once one turns you down every credit card credit check after that will KILL your score.

WTF? Can your brother explain why this is so? It doesn't make much sense to me.

Your realtor brother should lose his license.
