Wisconsin hunter wants open season on free-roaming domestic cats
WBAY ^

Posted on 03/06/2005 8:32:04 PM PST by esryle

MADISON, Wis. Hunter Mark Smith welcomes wild birds onto his property, but if he sees a cat, he thinks the "invasive" animal should be considered fair game.

The 48-year-old firefighter from La Crosse has proposed that hunters in Wisconsin make free-roaming domestic cats an "unprotected species" that could be shot at will by anyone with a small-game license.

Hunters will vote on the proposal on April 11th during hearings for the Wisconsin Conservation Congress across the state.

Smith's proposal has horrified cat lovers, but some see it as a way of stopping cats from killing wild birds.

Department of Natural Resources attorney Tim Andryk says the vote would simply be an advisory recommendation to state lawmakers.

He says that to have open season on roaming cats, laws that relate to abuse of domestic animals may have to be amended.

I'm not a cat lover, but history has taught us that removing a predator, like a wild cat, to save a prey animal, in this case birds, usually results in an uncontrolled abundance of prey animals.

By naturally controlling the population of birds the cats are making sure the birds don't over populate the area and become pests.

I oppose cutting off fingers at the knuckles, and not just for cats.

Posting clever means to kill someones pet is not the purpose of this web site. Go away.

"Some cat lovers think because they love their animal, that everybody in their neighborhood should put up with their animals which will kill anything they can catch for fun."

I love my cat but I had him fixed and I don't let him roam. Our neighbor's cat used to jump on my screens and rip them up but something happened to him last year and he hasn't been seen since. We've got a lot of Coyotes and Foxs roaming around here that like a tasty cat-burger. Feral cats are very bad for wildlife and should be shot on sight.

Why don't cat owners simply control their domesticated pets like every other one? Why must they roam uncontrolled in cities unlike dogs or snakes or any other pet with natural predatory instincts?

ARRRRGGGHHHHH, common sense, MY EYES, MY EYES!!!

You let your declawed cats outside and then have the audacity to blame others when they get injured?

There are things like SoftPaws that one can install on cats that will let them maintain their claws while rendering them less useful as weapons.

My stepmother got "SoftPaws" for our cat, and they're great. Little plastic balls that are glued on to the end of trimmed claws. You know it's time to trim to claws and apply a new set when it sounds like the cat is tap dancing across a linolium floor! lol

Boss hawg. I never said anything about declawing.

Why would anyone let an ignorant animal like a dog or a cat out in front of a 3000 lb car at 40mph? When I see a flat cat on a road that was some child's pet, I think about the careless bastard parent that let it happen.

Claws or not.

I guess times have changed. I grew up in Wisconsin many years ago. Conservation authorities then realized that ferral cats were one of the most destructive wildlife entities that existed. PC runs everything these days.

No need to kill 'em. The mother of a coworker humanely traps the cats and turns them over to the humane society. Costs the owners big bucks to retrieve their pets.

Why do cat owners think that they have the right to allow their animals to roam freely, and crap in my flowerbed? Not that I agree with hunting them, but I've tossed more that a few nuggets from my neighbors cat back on their patio. I don't let my dogs crap in their yard, I expect the same courtesy.

I am a very sincere dog lover, but a roming pack of feral dogs is as dangerous as a pack of wolves.

When they are hungry they will attack anything.
