Slovakia expels two Czechs for burning U.S. flag

BRATISLAVA- Slovak police this morning expelled two Czech citizens who were detained when burning the U.S. flag during the address U.S. President George W. Bush made in Bratislava centre on Thursday, Bratislava police spokeswoman Silvia Mihalikova has announced. Apart from the Czechs, police also detained three Slovaks who were calling Bush names during his speech on Hviezdoslav square.

However, none of the arrested persons has been accused of crime and their behaviour has been qualified as a misdemeanour only.

One of the Czechs faces charges of marijuana possession since police uncovered a bag with some dried substance on him which was sent for further analysis.

The arrest of five activists was the only incident during Bush's two-day visit to Bratislava. Other protests, staged by the Greenpeace environmental movement and Slovak Communists (KSS), were calm without any excesses.

As disgusting and contemptible as burning the flag is, it is too bad that they do not have the freedom to do so.

I'd have more respect if they would set themselves on fire. That's a REAL protest.

"... As disgusting and contemptible as burning the flag is, it is too bad that they do not have the freedom to do so."

The Slovaks charged them with a misdemeanor of setting fires in a public place.

Is it a restriction of freedom of speech to keep potential arsonists from setting things ablaze whenever they feel like it?

Is burning trash in my backyard 'freedom of speech' in areas that otherwise restrict trash-burning? Why is it OK then if it's a flag?
