Terri Schiavo - Won't Someone Help?
The National Ledger ^ | Feb 22, 2005 | L.A. Morris

Posted on 02/22/2005 9:41:17 AM PST by AliVeritas

Sixth Circuit Court Judge George Greer ruled late Monday afternoon that George Felos and Michael Schiavo cannot implement their stated plan to withdraw the gastric feeding tube of Terri Schindler-Schiavo until a hearing is held on Weds, Feb 23 to determine if the stay in effect from Greer's 2000 death order should remain in place while her parents, Mary and Robert Schindler Sr., continue with their legal options in trying to keep her alive.

The Schindlers had hoped to convince the court that starving Terri to death would violate her religious liberties. As a Catholic, the Schindlers contend Terri would not want to have her life ended.

If anyone ever deserved a second chance, it's Terri Schiavo, the central figure in a battle for the rights of the handicapped. She has no idea of the controversy swirling about her, and has been unaware of the fight for her life since she collapsed of a potassium deficiency in 1990. But regardless of the why and how, Terri's collapse starved her brain of oxygen, and she has never been mentally or physically revived past a semi-vegetative state.

If you had no thought process, how could you beg?

I suppose you're a qualified neurologist? Are you aware that in a court there are paid professionals who would testify to both extremes. So who's right?

What's amazing to me is the people on these threads who argue that someone is eating up tax dollars or being a burden or, or, or...a human being is not a commodity. A human being is not property. A human being has worth regardless of the circumstances. When did we begin to put a price tag on a human life? God decided human lives were so valuable He gave up his own to save them.

I was head of the nursing home ministry in my church. I saw so many elderly and so many young accident victims who had been abandoned without hope. I started a choir, even for those who couldn't speak, and you should have seen the enthusiasm. Even the advanced Alzheimer's patients eyes would sparkle with joy when we sang Jesus Loves Me. And put a Sinatra song on for one of the "lost" causes and watch her whole face glow as bright as the sun.

People are valuable. They are God's and it is not our right to say if they live or die just because they're "inconvenient."

Watch how someone treats their family members -- especially the old or the disabled -- and you have a pretty good indication who and what they are all about.

I was just wondering how Medicaid is paying for her when you are ONLY SUPPOSED TO BE IN HOSPICE FOR 6 months and then die. Seems to me that Felos/Greer are wanting to hide that little tidbit. Only way you can get around it (IMO) would be to file fake papers.

Thanks for all your pings, Ohioan. This whole thing is just breaking my heart. I know for all of us who have kept up with this for several years and have been working and praying, it is very discouraging, but God may perform a miracle yet.

For everyone who is tired in this spiritual battle, the Psalms, especially those at the beginning, are full of hope and encouragement. I recommend praying them for Terri throughout the day. It will help remind us that it is the Lord who still in control.

Yeah... who shows the BLIND judge where his food and utensils are? Who does his food shopping for him? This evil &*#% would KILL all quadraplegics, anyone who had a stroke and cannot feed him- or herself, anyone who needs help to eat. Why should Terri's RIGHT TO LIFE be up to this useless fool?

My My........ doesn't Terri have interesting reflexive behaviors?
If nothing else she should be kept alive in order to study her further, as according to many posters here who accept her tests and exams as proof that she is brain dead, she shouldn't be exibiting these behaviors.

Of course the tests just can't be wrong, and while we can critique the parents observations we can't critique the test because the tests are objective and of course can't be tampered with. The patient must conform to the tests and not vice versa.....and we will kill those that don't. We must continue to worship technology. /sarc

Yeah, and also lets take his dog, aid or whatever his outside intervention (life support) is...away from him and see how adaptable he can be. I'll bet you would be able to hear his whining clear in California. But he's a member of the elite class and it will not ever happen.

That's been my position for quite some time now. I feel this avalanche of emails etc. has been for nought. The decision HAS BEEN MADE!! PHYSICALLY RESCUE this girl or she will be dead soon. The door to killing all the "inconvenient" will be wide open and such things as LIVING WILLS will be moot. You are dealing with deep seated corruption of a sweeping wide range and the ONLY thing to be done here is to take charge. What a TRAVESTY. I'm MORE THAN DISAPPOINTED in Jeb Bush. He was always one of my favorites.

I can’t say it for every case and I am not sure of all the circumstances in this case. Some people want to keep people who are in a vegetative state alive for their own selfish reason. They don’t want to let them go, they want to keep them around so they can go visit their loved one. But in many cases it is nothing short of torture to a person in that state.

My wife’s Grandmother was involved in a car accident about 6 years ago. She was paralyzed from the neck down. She had to have a breathing tube, feeding tube, and a tube to take away the waste. She could talk but with great difficulty. She in the beginning was fairly mentally sound. She did not want to live the rest of her life in that condition, but once the breathing tube is in place the decision to remove it has to come from a court.

She begged to have the machine turn off. She begged her husband to turn the machine off, but all he could tell her was that he would go to jail for murder if he did. As time went on she began to hate him for not simply turning off the machine. She would to say to him, “if you loved me you would do this for me.” She died 2 years ago and he died 1 year after her. I know he was in mental pain for many years, feeling guilty he could end her suffering.

I can’t say it for all cases but I do believe that humans should not be forced to live in a state of mental torture to satisfy a law or someone selfish feeling that they don’t want to lose that person.

You are in error sir. As of Jan 4th, 2004 Dr Hammesfahr diagrees and he is a pre-eminent neurologist. Are you a doctor? Or just someone with an agenda?

You need to listen to this. Ron Panzer's AUDIO interview with Dr. Hammesfahr who performed tests on Terri for 10 hours.

The media is shifting ever so slowly. I hear and read more and more that Terri is brain damaged, rather than PVS.

In my opinion, the Bloggers (and us!) are moving them closer to honesty. They know what happened to Dan Rather! (And it happened at FR first! I know because I read that thread nearly live.)
