A Darkness Falls on England

London — It may sometimes seem that British Jews display upper lips as stiff as their non-Jewish countrymen's, preferring to suffer quietly or downplay prejudice directed against them.

But new official statistics have revealed that anti-Semitic incidents in Britain have reached new heights.

According to the Community Security Trust, the body that monitors threats to British Jewry, a total of 532 anti-Semitic incidents were recorded last year, marking a 42 percent increase from 2003.

The figures include a 323% rise in anti-Semitic threats, with an all-time high of 93 such incidents last year, compared with 22 in 2003.

There was also a 54% increase in assaults, with 83 attacks recorded last year, including four in which the victim's life was endangered.

But community leaders are keen to emphasize that this new atmosphere goes far beyond street thuggery.

They charge that widespread media hostility toward Israel, which many feel often crosses the line from acceptable criticism into downright bias, has served to legitimize prejudice against Jews.

One such incident was the publication of a cartoon in the staunchly pro-Palestinian newspaper The Independent on January 27, 2003 — Holocaust Memorial Day — that showed Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon biting off the head of a Palestinian child.

Not only were official complaints by Jewish groups dismissed, but the drawing went on to win the Cartoon of the Year award from Britain's Political Cartoon Society.

As for the BBC, whose policy is to describe Palestinian terrorists as "militants," the corporation's stance so angered the Israeli government that by mid-2003 Israeli officials temporarily severed all official contact with the broadcaster.

The issue has spilled over into university circles, with calls for British scholars to boycott their Israeli counterparts.

I am happy you got to go to Israel. I would love to go too someday. Things are probably going to calm down with this peace treaty . You know, the calm that comes before the storm ..

Why are they called anti-semitic attacks, instead of anti-Jewish attacks?

the term 'anti-Semitic" has just become ingrained in people.

Personally, I prefer "Jueophobic".

Wow. Good post. Very concise and accurate description of the state of The Body in Britain.
"
You wrote:Today if you openly talk about the rapture and Bible prophecies in Britain, you will be mocked as fringe fundies."

Just as an indication of how averse many are to The Word of God I'm sure some FReeper will drop in here and bash us. I haven't gotten to the end of the thread yet but I've seen massive derision before hear when the subject of biblical prophecy and The End Times comes up.

Let me drop in a word here about millennialism. There are lots of us who are 'ah' but not anti. We just don't know because there is so very little scripture to support it ... but that we will be with Christ for eternity is not in doubt. Nor have we much doubt that all that was prophesied is now coming to fruition. It is maximally obvious. Those who denounce this have to rip whole passages of scripture out of the book and throw them away.

The trouble is that the doctrine of the "rapture" is not part of authentic Christianity. St. Peter didn't teach it. St. Paul didn't teach it. St. Augustine didn't teach it. Neither did St. Thomas, nor any of the Popes, nor Martin Luther, nor John Calvin, nor Zwingli, nor Cranmer, nor Wesley. The Rapture doctrine was created in the 19th Century by J.N. Darby, and turned into big bucks by the modern Evagelical publishing industry. It's the Evangelical version of Sci-Fi.

The Lord will surely return, but when He does it won't be a "secret rapture". When the world ends, space and time will evaporate like smoke and everything will be revealed as it truly is. There won't be any doubt as to what has happened: as C.S. Lewis wrote, "When the Author walks on stage, the play is over."

Well anybody who likes CS is a friend of mine. Like I've said, I've never been either here nor there regarding the rapture. That being said, I firmly believe that "That Day" and "End of the Age" are in the bible for a reason.

Yes when the Author walks on the stage everything goes poof but what a Christian does in these Last Days leading up to that End is very important. To my mind the accuracy and miraculous nature of prophecy is a very good way to lead souls to Christ. Jesus used it. Why shouldn't we?

I don't believe that there are more jew haters in the UK. I think the nation is fairly "liberal" in the good sense of the word. I do think the public has been sold a false bill of goods about Israel ie. they have been propagandized. And I think that the liberal establishment has causes this because they believe that the Palestinians are the underdog and deserve/need help. So, they have pushed a hard core pro-palestinian line to "balance" and help them out. However, they have gone too far. They have simply chosen to ignore and downplay the Palestinian faults which are many and severe, and exaggerate Israeli actions in the effort to acheive their vision for the region. The result, however, has become that a whole generation of the public no longer fully understands the issues at play. They don't understand about Arab nationalism (which if left unfettered would probably be just as German nationalism was) and Islamism and how these philosophies influence the Arab and Palestinian culture.

It is, imho, sad when the establishment purposefully chooses to keep the population ignorant by selective information and disinformation. It is not helpful it only further inflames conflict because when people do not really understand what is motivating other people it is that much harder to reconcile problems.

Just my two cents.

Ford's weekly newspaper, the Dearborn Independent, suddenly changed its format and started attacking Jews. At the time the paper had a circulation of about 300,000 8 and was distributed nationally by Ford automobile dealers.

Ford Headquarters in Dearborn:

Pretty gutsy of them smack in the middle of the largest Muslim community in the USA.
