London — It may sometimes seem that British Jews display upper lips as stiff as their non-Jewish countrymen's, preferring to suffer quietly or downplay prejudice directed against them.

But new official statistics have revealed that anti-Semitic incidents in Britain have reached new heights.

According to the Community Security Trust, the body that monitors threats to British Jewry, a total of 532 anti-Semitic incidents were recorded last year, marking a 42 percent increase from 2003.

The figures include a 323% rise in anti-Semitic threats, with an all-time high of 93 such incidents last year, compared with 22 in 2003.

There was also a 54% increase in assaults, with 83 attacks recorded last year, including four in which the victim's life was endangered.

But community leaders are keen to emphasize that this new atmosphere goes far beyond street thuggery.

They charge that widespread media hostility toward Israel, which many feel often crosses the line from acceptable criticism into downright bias, has served to legitimize prejudice against Jews.

One such incident was the publication of a cartoon in the staunchly pro-Palestinian newspaper The Independent on January 27, 2003 — Holocaust Memorial Day — that showed Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon biting off the head of a Palestinian child.

Not only were official complaints by Jewish groups dismissed, but the drawing went on to win the Cartoon of the Year award from Britain's Political Cartoon Society.

As for the BBC, whose policy is to describe Palestinian terrorists as "militants," the corporation's stance so angered the Israeli government that by mid-2003 Israeli officials temporarily severed all official contact with the broadcaster.

The issue has spilled over into university circles, with calls for British scholars to boycott their Israeli counterparts.

I agree with both of you. It's quite rare to see pre-trib brothers in Christ on this board (Quix, nmh, Happygrl, DannyTN are some others that I know) and I'm glad you have talked about the prophetic significance of anti-Semitism in European countries and Britain.

Britain used to be a very Christian country and the first openly well-known pre-trib Bible teachers were all British (J.N. Darby, 19th century missionary to China Hudson Taylor, to name a few). 20th century has witnessed a wholescale apostasy of the British Christian scene which made way to today's "post-Christian" Britain. In today's Britain the predominant religion is environmentalism, feel-good-help-Third-World-through-multinationalism, European Union-ism, sex, drugs, soccer, and celebrity worship. Those that call themselves Christians are cultural/national "Christians" ("I'm a Christian since I belong to the Church of England" etc), and only 4% are serious Christians. And of these 4%, premillennialism, let alone pre-trib rapture, are extremely rare to find. I have seen biblically orthodox Bible teachers in CofE openly preaching solarity-with-(Arab)-Palestinians with alleged Bible and secular current affairs backing (Stephen Sizer at http://www.virginiawater.co.uk/christchurch/ ).

The situation is so bleak. Today if you openly talk about the rapture and Bible prophecies in Britain, you will be mocked as fringe fundies. Prophecy itself is sneered at as Americanist alarmism designed to derail the European project and supporting Israel. Perhaps paraphrasing Arnold Fruchtenbaum's observations on England is an appropriate end to my rant here:

The British Empire prospered at the times when Britain was generous to the Jewish people. God used Lloyd George and the British government of 1917 to roll out his plan for Israel's rebirth as a nation through the Balfour Declaration. Unfortunately Britain itself, through its own geopolitical and diplomatic considerations, chose to appease Arabs around Palestine and adopted increasingly harsh measures towards the Jewish people's desires to resettle in the Holy Land and supported Arab claims after 1920. As a result the British Empire started to crumble, just like historical Spain, Tsarist Russian Empire before her. Note that most of the internal and external fracture to the British Empire occured after 1920, precisely after Britain changed its policies towards Jews. God's prophecy regarding Gentiles' attitudes towards Abraham's inheriting descendants (Jewish people) "I will bless them that bless thee, and him that curseth thee will I curse: and in thee shall all the families of the earth be blessed" (Genesis 12:3) is once agaion fulfilled when we study the rise and fall of the British Empire.

Remember that Britain was a part of Roman Empire (although to be fair, it was only a part in Pax Romana, and not in Jesus' times or when Revelation was written in AD 95), I personally believe Britain could well be sucked into a part of the Antichrist's world empire as a stagesetting of Jesus's return.

Walt Disney Exposed Communists in Hollywood.

With the advent of comprehensive gun control there has been an exponential increase in all manner of assaults,thuggery and crime in England.

The Police have tried to control public perception of the gravity of the situation with new crime report standards.(Combining multiple assaults from one perpetrator into 'one' crime; down-listing rapes to simple assault; etc)

I would suggest some of these antisemitic statistics may be part of England's larger problem.

The Jewish Community may wish to do what they did not do in Germany- arm themselves.
