Victor Davis Hanson: [‘Response to Readership’] Why did the South start the Civil War?
VDH Private Papers ^ | February 17, 2005 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 02/17/2005 1:55:46 PM PST by quidnunc

Q: After having read many accounts of the Civil War, I still don’t understand why South Carolina fired on Ft. Sumter, galvanizing the North into war.  What do you think might have happened had the South continued to let these coastal forts be manned by the Union for a longer time?

Hanson: I think conflict was inevitable, because the South had little appreciation of Northern industrial power nor of the competence of a number of formerly nondescript Union officers. The best officers of the Mexican War had joined the Confederacy and there was an erroneous general impression that all superior commanders had left the Union, and with vaunted Southern courage, a big victory or two would teach the Yankees that going into the Confederacy was simply not worth the trouble, especially for the increasingly controversial idea of emancipation. …

Try maryland and deleware both allowed slavery during the civil war and were union states.. Lincoln had no problem with THEM owning slaves, but only 'states in rebellion' he did not touch slavery within his own borders!!! how hypocritical.

Slavery was legal in the USA. Lincoln could not simply free the slaves in non-rebellious states without a Constitutional amendment.

He could, however, free the slaves in the rebellious states in his role as commander in chief. Freeing the slaves in the South helped cripple the Southern economy.

You lost, we won. DEAL with it.

Don't you love that fact that the winners always get to write the history?

Ft Pillow DID happen. You denying it puts you on a par with William Pierce and Ward Churchill when they deny the Holocaust.

most NORMAL people (at least in dixie), who have an education AND "an IQ over room temperature" do NOT believe that the coven of criminals & sycophants around lincoln were decent/well-meaning/honorable.

It must bother you that the Lincoln Memorial is one of the most-visited monuments in the nation. It would seem that your countrymen do not agree with your views on Lincoln and his government.

It also must drive you up the wall that there is a stature of Lincoln in Richmond.

you're entitled to hold ANY opinion, no matter how wrong. (fwiw, the ATROCITY on 9/11 has NOTHING to do with dixie's continuing lust for FREEDOM from the damnyankee elites. NOTHING!) it's called FREEDOM.

otoh, i HATE baseball and basketball! i wouldn't go see a baseball game if i was PAID to sit through one- watching paint dry is more exciting.

DALLAS COWBOYS, forever. washington DEADskins, NEVER!

I like this quote from Forrest the most.
"Keep up the Skeer (scare)!" Which meant to never give a retreating enemy the chance to rest.

What's wrong with playing with fire?

It worked for LeMay and his B-29's in May 1945 over Tokyo...........

Watie's standard m.o. is to present, as evidence, something he says someone told him once.

Ask him about Dr. Lubar at the Smithsonian.

I'm asking a question, PLEASE Dont say it wasn't over slavery it was. But that was only a few of the Southerners. Most were poor. I think they were duped.

When a "question" is framed "PLEASE don't say it wasn't 'X', it was 'X', then it's not really a question, it's an assertion. Furthermore, the person posing the "question" in this manner is not interested in learning, but in trying to "win" a debate.

Fortunately, I'm heading out of town for a few days, and won't have to witness another episode here of "sound and fury, signifying nothing". I hope everyone has fun re-opening the old wounds; I'm a bit more concerned about all those nice folks around the world planning to kill us today."

Lincoln "provoked" the rebels into firing on a US Fort?

Just like we "provoked" OBL into 9/11, huh?

Where did you learn history? from "Professor" Ward Churchill?

sorry, but you are 100% WRONG. the astaffmembers of the OFFICIAL HISTORIAN of the US ARMY admits that there was NO MASSACRE at Ft Pillow!

furthermore, the historian's office admits that the "evidence" to the contrary was " perjury, which the officials of the government knew, or should have known, AT THAT TIME to be FALSE and/or that officers of the US Army knowingly SUBORNED perjury". (emphasis: mine)

Let's just agree to Disagree, alright. The Civil War was bad, it was very very bad. Thank Goodness it's been over for 140 years.

We are the UNITED STATES of AMERICA. States that are United, so lets start acting a little more united.

And Stand Watie, Please be GLAD the south lost- because we would not be one country.

That's your own delusional persecution complex speaking there, Watie. Just because you claim to be an Indian and I don't like you doesn't mean I don't like Indians. Find the posts where I've said such things, put them up for all to see and judge. Otherwise, apologize.

Why do people get so upset over this?

Look at it this way, The Confederacy asserted States rights and the Union asserted we would be one nation. They both won, alright. Everyone won the Civil War.
