It's clearly been a difficult grieving process for Katie. The success of the Iraqi elections was obviously a painful blow to the superannuated cheerleader, and she's struggling to regain her equilibrium
Working through the various stages of healing, Katie for the time being seems somewhat stuck in the "denial" phase, in which she cannot bring herself to accept that the elections were indeed successful and have given Iraq a fighting chance to move toward democracy.
Thus it was that in her interview of NBC reporter Richard Engel, reporting from Baghdad, Katie chose to emphasize the negative.
The premise of Couric's first question was that those wacky mullahs in Iran will have inordinate influence over the Shiites who will dominate the new Iraqi government.
Engel abetted this gloomy view, mentioning that the head of one of the major new Iraqi parties spent 20 years in Iran and was a member of something called the Bomber Brigades (not clear exactly who they were bombing). He also mentioned that the Iranians are contributing to charities in a couple of Shiite-majority cities.
Engel did mention that the Shiites failed to garner a sufficient majority to establish a government entirely on their own, and thus that the Kurds will have a chance to play kingmaker.
Next, obviously distraught over the insurgents' possibly waning influence, Katie asked: "after the election, some had a feeling that the insurgents weren't as all-powerful as they had been portrayed. But since the election, 108 people have been killed in various insurgent attacks."
Couric then moved to the question of the day, in which her own hopes and dreams were clearly on display: "So, have the elections galvanized the insurgents or [Heaven forbid] placated them?"
Engel surmised that the elections have placed the insurgents "in an awkward position. Prior to the election they could argue they were fighting US occupation but as Iraqis take over they have to find a new angle. Now they are trying to delegitimize the government and are finding some support among Sunnis."
If Iraq continues on its path toward democracy, we're all going to have to come together to be supportive of Katie, as she plunges deeper into grief and depression.

LOL...yes those poor Baathists. They tried so hard to get ahead and then the great Satan, America, had to come and ruin everything. Shame on us. :)
Thanks for your daily Today posts...I was flipping though channels later in the hour and saw a couple and their attorney on the show and couldn't figure out what they were discussing except it was about their child and Advil. Does anyone know what that was all about?

My guess is that millions watch who are not particularly politically attuned, and aren't focusing on the show's political bias. Also, Today tends to attract the best "gets" - the people making the news.
In any case, since the fact remains that Today is an important source of news and views for millions of Americans, I believe it's worthwhile to keep track of what they're up to.

Iraq is a much more secular country. It is not Iran. The idea that Iraq would become a vassal state of Iran is nonsense. First, Iraq is an Arab country speaking Arabic, while Iran is Persian speaking Farsi. They have different cultures and history. The Iraqi Sh'ia did not side with Iran during the seven year Iran-Iraq War.
Personally, I think there has been too much made of the religious differences within Iraq. They do not dictate relationships. It has more to do with the Baathists and their desire to continue to run the country along with AQ and foreign Islamo-fascist terrorists who will do anything to prevent a democratic government in Iraq.

I saw the couple and the Advil story. Their daughter was sick with a virus and had a fever. The doctor recommended Children's Advil . She had a bad reaction after only two doses. She became extremely ill and then died. After the first dose she got a rash, that was actually a sign that she was possibly reacting badly to the Advil, but the parents and the doctor were thinking it was part of the virus. Very scary.
And we Freepers who are either cubicle-bound or who can't bear to watch the terminally perky Al-Qaety, are grateful to you.

I know this thread is about the politics of the Today show but I really wanted to hear that story about Advil. I have g/kids that take it regularly. Very scary indeed. Thanks for the info. I wonder if it was the 1st time that child took Advil.

Hey, if the story isn't about her own colonoscopy, she's bored and sad.
She said she had given it to her before. That was weird. So, they really can't say definitely that it wasn't some strange virus reacting badly to the Advil. They are suing the makers of Advil for not properly warning. But, I just don't understand why it would have killed her. It was called some syndrome and they said that syndrome can be attributed to ibuprofen.
