A new, highly resistant strain of HIV that appears to develop rapidly into AIDS has been diagnosed in a New Yorker who had not previously undergone antiviral drug treatment, says the city health department, which is holding a press conference today.
While drug resistance is increasingly common in people who have been treated for the human immunodeficiency virus, city officials called the case extremely rare. The patient, who now has AIDS, is a male in his mid-40s who reported multiple male sex partners and unprotected anal intercourse, often while using crystal methamphetamine. The patient appears to have developed AIDS within two to three months of HIV infection, and at the most 20 months. People who contract AIDS usually get it more than 10 years after initial infection with HIV.

New York City Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden, at a press conference, urged gay men to avoid recreational drug use, which can dull a person's judgement and awareness of the need to practice safe sex.
"This case is a wake-up call, said New York City Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden.
"Not only are we seeing syphilis and a rare sexually transmitted disease -- lymphogranuloma venereum -- among these men, now we've identified this strain of HIV that is difficult or impossible to treat and which appears to progress rapidly to AIDS," he said.

Of course when they start dropping like flies from this butt bug, it will be Bush's fault for not funding a study of it from the outset.

It appears that those who insist on engaging in insane behaviour, will find that the virus will insist on killing them.

It's been said a thousand times, but I'll say it again: Abstinence is the best AIDS prevention program!

But they would never suggest the most OBVIOUS and EFEFCTIVE way to avoid it..."DOn't have anal sex."
But of course that would be homophobic and the utterer would lose his job.

Is it a new strain, or is it the crystal meth?

"He was first diagnosed with HIV in December and since then has tested positive for AIDS."Should be reverse, tested + for HIV & diagnosed with AIDS.
"3-DCRHIV" returns nothing on Google... any idea which research group isolated this strain?
<-Recalls that mutation rate of HIV virions is quite elevated; yet I'm surprised the protease inhibitors (evidentally) don't work...

Is it a new strain, or is it the crystal meth? Exactly. The overwhelming majority of American AIDS cases involve heavy drug use which itself is immunosuppresive.
