Mark Dayton Not Running For Re-election
Minneapolis Star Tribune (aka The Red Star) ^

Posted on 02/09/2005 9:59:41 AM PST by MplsSteve

Wow, if this is true Minnesota is gonna be a huge free for all in '06.

Everybody and their brother will run for this seat.

The DFL still has a large reservoir of talent even though the GOP has pulled to almost parity in recent elections.

Opinions anyone?

Problem is, Jesse talked like a libertarian/conservative, but governed like a liberal. No Thanks!

I liked his idea of a unicameral legislator... problem is the legislators didn't like it!

Yep. I can't stop thinking that guy's name fits in real well with another sort of diction:

Matt DAY-MON!

Mark DAY-TON!

But there is enough of a hard-left base here to make another Wellstone candidacy a real threat on the basis of name recognition alone.

Mind you, I think a strong Republican candidate would do quite well and the right one would probably win, but name recognition really matters here.

What about Arne Carlson for the Repubs, he was a hugely popular governor. Does anyone think he might run?

Carlson lives in the Twin Cities area but he has permanently retired from politics and has no desire to hold elected office.

It may be that the wealthy Dayton simply can no longer stand the financial "sacrifice" of serving in the Senate. He has too many private investments to handle: Senate duties interfere with his priorities, I would imagine.

On the Republican side, Congressman Mark Kennedy was already an near-official candidate. Congressman Gil Gutkchect and Secretary of State Mary Kiffmeyer are also considering candidacies. I am particularly intrigued by Kiffmeyer, a two-time statewide officeholder, former nurse, and pro-life Catholic woman.

Among the 'Rats, state Supreme Court Justice Alan Page would be particularly formidible. Congressman Colin Peterson, a pro-life moderate, would be well-positioned in the general election, but it's not clear he could win a primary.

I remember them. RINO Durenburger was a loser, a drunk who leaked intelligence secrets, violated Senate ethics, and had an extramarital affair with a staffer.

Judi Dutcher still viable?

They may select a woman; they have before. Remember Ann Wynia? Thee worst candidate ever. IMO

and will Jesse Ventura should he run, win or will this help GOP?

Its an either or type thing.

He does draw alot of tradionaly young voters, so he does hurt the dems, but he also talks (and claims to be) libertarian with his talk of shrinking government, and pro-gun rights, and tax cuts.

It would all depend on what type of campaign he runs. In his book, he noted that the republican in his governors race, agreed with him on all economic issues.

Either way, he's not going to run, he made his money, and he's happy with it. Washington DC is not a place he would like.

I also heard somewhere that one of Paul Wellstone's sons might try for the senate seat? Any truth in that rumor?

Nope, alot of left wing activists tried, very very hard, to get him to run after his dad died.

They also wanted him to run for congress, or any race.

He has no interest in politics, though he is a flaming lefty.

On the local news, no mention was made of a Judy Dutcher candidacy.

Female names bandied about so far are:

Amy Klobuchar, Hennepin County Attorney - She would be a formidable candidate. She has great name ID in the Twin Cities metro area and for a Dem, she's surprisingly hard on crime. I've met her on a few occasions and she's very personable as well.

Betty McCollum, 4th District US Rep - Was the beneficiary of the "We need to elect a Democrat woman" mantra by DFL activists in 2000. Has a very safe district and is quite liberal. She might be too liberal for out-state Minnesota though.

He was pretty conservative in the House and worked well with John Kasich. Maybe he would run as a Republican.

Wash. Post reports tonight that there's an excellent chance Congressman Mark Kennedy will run for the GOP.

On the Democratic on non-Republican side, Tim Penny, Collin Peterson and "Jesse the Mind" are not mentioned, though Al Franken and Garrison Keillor are.

Either channel 5 or 9 (can't remember which) mentioned her.

Can't wait to watch the cattle show for both parties.

Regards from south of the river.
