RICHMOND, Virginia (AP) -- Virginians who wear their pants so low their underwear shows may want to think about investing in a stronger belt.

The state's House of Delegates passed a bill Tuesday authorizing a $50 fine for anyone who displays his or her underpants in a "lewd or indecent manner."

Del. Lionell Spruill Sr., a Democrat who opposed the bill, had pleaded with his colleagues to remember their own youthful fashion follies.

All constitutionality aside

I'm not in favor of looking at punk kid's underwear either, but that's a mighty big aside you mention there.

I think that when caught with clothing like this, the cops should immediately be required to stable their pants to their hips above the underwear line.

If these kids realized the prison origins of this fashion, they might not be so proud to display their undies.

Don't be silly. Are you really going to fill the jails with underpants law violators? What you're trying to do is stop youthful rebelliousness expressed in currently fashionable garb. Not an easy thing to do unless you're prepared to take Draconian action.

i agree. Next we can cane people for spitting or chewing gum! I hate it when people spit! The government should totally be able to tell me what to wear, how to wear it, and when to wear it! Yeah right on! </heavy sarcasm dripping with poison>

Nah, they're just looking to fill their coffers.

This law should have a "weight" clause. Any of you who have seen it know what I am talking about.

I think that would make it more attractive to them. We've got some little middle-class punks around here that try to be bad but they're just laughable. If I dropped them in my old neighborhood their hair would turn white and fall out.

Next they need to make a rule that if a persons music can be heard in the next car at a stop light, the person who's stereo is making the noise, will be puleed out and beaten severly about the head and ears.

This actually stems from a larger issue. Popular culture. Current popular culture teaches children that the measure of success if to become a sports player or a rap artist. (I use the term rpa artist with reservation) it teaches the degredation of women and popularizes criminal behaviour. I hope that in the next few years, the pendulum will swing back to rewarding civilized behaviour.

As if law enforcement doesn't already have its hands full. So do the "Clothing Police" fall under the jurisdiction of the DEA since they will be regulating "crack" exposure in urban neighborhoods? Find a better way to spend my tax dollars please.
