Global warming the key to life on Mars
The Guardian ^ | Monday February 7, 2005 | Tim Radford

US scientists have thought up a new way to create a second home - by warming up the atmosphere of Mars. Mars - which used to be warm and wet - has an atmosphere rich in carbon dioxide. But because the red planet's atmosphere is so thin, the planet is now freezing cold.

But Margarita Marinova, of Nasa Ames research centre in California, and colleagues report in the Journal of Geophysical Research-Planets that artificially created greenhouse gases could set the Martian climate simmering. "Bringing life to Mars and studying its growth would contribute to our understanding of evolution, and the ability of life to adapts and proliferate on other worlds," Dr Marinova said.

"Since warming Mars effectively reverts it to its past, more habitable state, this would give any possibly dormant life on Mars the chance to be revived."

She and her colleagues created a computer model of the Martian atmosphere, and tested it with a series of fluorine-based gases. They found that a gas called octafluoropropane could begin a process of global warming on Mars.

This would take hundreds or even thousands of years. But since the raw materials already exist there, some future space mission could start to turn up the heat in a world frozen for at least 2bn years.

God I love to hear liberals calling for more global warming!

Keyword: "GETCHUAHZTOMAHZ"

QUAID.. Start the reactor!

*chuckle*
Where are all the environuts screaming about the thought of terraforming Mars via global warming?

I'm also seeing scenes from the game Doom3..

BTW, I was wondering how long it would take fir someone to figure out the keyword. For this, you win a prize: A picture of Cohaagen exploding from lack of atmosphere.

"Since warming Mars effectively reverts it to its past, more habitable state, this would give any possibly dormant life on Mars the chance to be revived."

And exterminate whatever has developed to exist in those conditions over the last 2 billion-odd years, and preempt whatever may yet arise there naturally.

I think what she is really saying is that warming Mars makes it a more habitable state for homo sapiens.

Not to worry - Remember these are the same "scientists" and same computer models that are predicting global warming here.

From what I understand, recent studies have shown that any chance of holding an atmosphere requires a good magnetic field, which deflects and channels charged particles in the solar wind. Without this natural shield, the atoms of the atmosphere are struck directly by these charged particles and are thus propelled into space (i.e. it takes more than gravity to retain an atmosphere).

Venus also does not have a magnetic field. check http://www-ssc.igpp.ucla.edu/personnel/russell/papers/venus_mag/

Yet Venus has an atmosphere 10 times that of Earth. The issue with a magnetic field is that it reflects radiation from the sun and prevents the planet from heating up like Venus.

Venus is also much larger than Mars. This isn't my theory, just reporting what others have studied...

Science fiction types have been talking about this for years, although not the specific gas mentioned. They call it "terraforming" -- turning another planet into an environment similar to earth's.

It's all Bush's fault.

And don't forget the Doom movie, starring... SWAT team members combatting virus-infected humans in a scenario startingly similar to Resident Evil (the game)!

I'd actually forgotten about that.
I'd hear they were going to film it, just not any details on it.

You're better off pretending it doesn't exist. They took out the three things that made it Doom: demons from Hell, the planet Mars, and space marines.

Karl Urban (Eomer in Lord of the Rings) basically shoots mutated humans infected with a virus, ala Resident Evil. It's complete inanity. Hollywood managed to screw up something as simple as Doom.

The scriptwriter wrote an open letter copping out and basically saying he's our hero because without him it would've been much worse. The only way it could've been worse is if Uwe Boll did the directing.
