'What is science'?

I think I can answer this. Scientists do not control the definition of the word 'science'.

Scientists are overwhelmingly paid by government grants, not student tuition money.

Therefore, the government ultimately decides how scientists practice 'science', and thus, control the meaning of the word 'science'.

Now, lemme think, what political party treats gov't as a religion .... oh, yes; ... godless, atheistic, liberal democrats.

'Science', then, is what liberal democrats use to spread godlessness, and to confuse ordinary citizens, who can't afford a private education, and so thereby prevent them from voting Republican.

Public school, huh? Well, you flunked logic 101. This is tinfoil hat-wearing, conspiracy theory muddling at its best.

The main difference between theologians and scientists is that scientists change their theories when new facts become available. Theologians have their minds made up and don't want to confused by the facts.

'What is science'?

Science is a basis of inquiry, using the formation and testing of an hypothesis, it's results must be duplicateable. Evolution is a theory, not a fact. It's fine as a theory, but anything that starts with a premise of "first there was nothing, and now there is everything" is leaving out something critical. IMHO, and I went to publick skool too, and got a 95 on the NY State Bio Regents.

You gotta wonder about the fear on the left, such craven fear they all exhibit, what is it they are so afraid of? They're weird, they really are.

I don't understand how the philosophy of evolution could be accorded the word "theory" when it comes to science. It is no such thing.

Ooooooooooh. That is really scary. So who exactly has been doing this? Where do they meet and when? Are their meetings secret? Do they publish their proposed meanings of science in the Federal Register for public comment?

'Science', then, is what liberal democrats use to spread godlessness, and to confuse ordinary citizens, who can't afford a private education, and so thereby prevent them from voting Republican.

Science is the reason you are still alive to post this paranoid nonsense on FR.

Scientists are overwhelmingly paid by government grants, not student tuition money.

A small minority of US scientists are paid on grants; and of course, foreign scientists are not paid on US grants at all.

Yet another case where you've simply made something up. The side of 'morality' once again caught in a lie.

I thank God that governments do not control the definition of science. The government of the State of Marlyland is trying but they shall fail. They will fail just as the kooks in other state legislation bodies have failed.

I think I can answer this. Scientists do not control the definition of the word 'science'.

I have to disagree. I've never encountered any objective definition of science other than that it is, essentially, "what scientists do." Note however that it is what scientists -- working scientists, conducting original research -- actually do, as opposed to what they might profess, think or believe.

Let's say, for instance, that every scientist on the face of the earth was a creationist, by belief and profession, but that the theories and principles they actually utilized and implicated in their ongoing research were all evolutionary rather than creationistic. In that case we would have to say that evolution was part of science but creationism was not. Likewise if scientists professed evolution but actually practiced creationism, we would have to say the reverse.

IOW scientists do control the "definition" (the content) of science, but they cannot do so by sheer intent, or by fiat, or by pronouncement. They must produce actual, productive work that manifests this content.

My distinction may seem odd, but from my reading I think it is much more common for scientists to work with theories they don't "believe" than most layman suspect.

Science is not found in a collection of ancient, contradictory writings in a half dozen languages, cobbled together at the behest of a late Roman emperor(talk about your government money) and translated nobody-knows how many times. Science is a on-going effort characterized by a willingness to question all things. It may be true that science cannot now answer all questions of origins but no religion tells where G-d came from.

To all the Creationists out there in your transcendent ivory towers, please explain to me your constant carping that Evolution has too many gaps (missing facts) to be believable, but you never explain the appearance of facts, such as fossil evidence like dinosaurs, that are missing in your handbook, the Bible

Oh, no! Not the stupid evolution controversy again! This is an issue that simply has to be put to bed! Enough already! No one knows how life began, but there is lots of evidence on how it progressed. There are important battles to fight; this is not one of them.

"Joel Cracraft, immediate past president of the American Institute of Biological Sciences, compared the scientific agreement on evolutionary theory to "the Earth revolving around the sun." "

Wonderful, Joel. Now predict the next evolutionary steps that will occur in the next ten years.
I'll bet the position of the Earth could be predicted fairly accurately before you schmucks even begin.
