"Hey Daunte, can I get some of that ice?"
What else could Culpepper have done in this situation?
To: mhking
Not the best way to back out of the situation, I reckon.

He used to be okay. He's actually getting stupider as time goes on.
He's protected by liberal sportswriters up here for reasons enunciated by Rush Limbaugh on ESPN.

Culpepper wanted to be nice and, not being a politician or Miss Manners, acted instinctively but by doing so accidentally gave the kid some false impressions. That doesn't exactly make Culpepper evil in my book. I suppose he should have just ignored the kid and avoided all this trouble, then he wouldn't be called all the horrible names people are using on this thread.
Someone who thinks they have the right to someone else's expensive goods just for the asking is the one with the problem with manners. If the kid, paralyzed or not, had any class, he would never even have thought about keeping the jewelry. Same goes double for the kid's parents.

Culpepper screwed up, but that kid needs a course in basic manners. Probably too late now ...

The confusion began at the FedEx ground and air player of the year honors, where finalists Culpepper, Peyton Manning, Shaun Alexander and Curtis Martin were on stage for the announcement.Curtis Martin should win this, being the oldest RB ever to win the rushing title, and leaping from 10th to 4th all-time in a signle season. I would have given it to Manning, but he sucked so bad vs. the Pats that he made a mockery of his entire eason.

Just a bunch of over paid thugs.

Thats what happens when fans and teams lower their standards.

The HS kid had no business soliciting bling in the first place. Culpepper's first mistake was trying to play Big Man in that situation.

I think Mr. C can afford to buy himself some new bling and let the kid have his old ones.

I've seen another version of this story where the kid asked if he could borrow some of it, and Daunte let him. I think it was in the N.Y. Post.
Anyway, what kind of a kid and family yell out something like that to a guy on stage -- remember that they were only guests at this event -- and then complain about not getting to keep something they had no right to in the first place? I don't imagine either the organizers or Culpepper knew these people were going to try to convert this into a panhandling event.
Glad he took it back. And if the kid and family think they are entitled to something for nothing, and spit on his gesture of letting the kid wear the stuff for an hour or so, I have no sympathy.
He earned it.
