...NOTICE the tracks in the snow from the landing gear that NEVER got off the ground...

Two tracks from main gear, but no nose gear track. Either the pilot never got it down all the way, or didn't quite get it up. Looks like icy conditions could be a factor either way..

Ice seems to be such a common cause of incidents you'd think there would be a bit more consciousness about it than there seems to be.

It was an MD83 and had been on the ground for about 40 minutes in 50°F weather. It got the ice above but it required deicing before it pushed back. I talked to the pilot who brought it from LA and he said he has seen them iced while on the ground at LAX, although it melts off a little quicker down there!

Plane crashes at New Jersey's Teterboro Airport

(Teterboro, N.J.-AP/WTNH, Feb. 2, 2005 8:27 AM) _ A small jet skidded off the runway at Teterboro Airport on Wednesday, crossing a highway during the morning rush hour and slamming into a warehouse.

There was no immediate word on injuries, but pictures showed several ambulances on the scene. Reports say as many as 12 people may have been on the plane.

A traffic helicopter pilot for New York radio station WCBS said the plane went off the runway and broke through a fence. It appeared to strike at least two cars.

Television reports showed smoke billowing from the building and skid marks leading to the crash site.

The jet is a CL-600 Challenger manufactured by Canadair LTD. It is owned by a tax consulting company in Dallas.

Route 46 closed in both directions and broadcast reports said the airport, in the northern New Jersey suburbs, was closed.

This is the same type of plane that crashed in Colorado, killing the son of NBC Sports president Dick Ebersol of Litchfield. Icing is suspected in the cause of that crash.

So while the headline is accurate, it is misleading since 9-11 forever gave special meaning to the phrase "plane hit building." An appropriate headline for the story would be "Plane runs into building" Anything else is just sensationalism.

I wonder why they didn't try to open the plane up some how?

I'm no expert, but introducing fresh air to a burning cabin could cause the fire to flash. Again, I don't know about how that affects priorities or procedures when you're trying to rescue people.

I never said anyone was 'harmed' by internet speculation. I happen to think it's juvenile. You happen to think it's 'something to do'. We just think differently.

There were two spots where the fire appeared to burn through the roof of the passenger area. Don't see any open doors on the port side of the aircraft, hope there are doors on the other side and they were open.

Oh my, I hope they were able to rescue the passengers before that fire started.

Also, I'd rather hear from FReepers who have real knowledge of aircraft, weather conditions, etc, who might actually have some valuable insight for the rest of us.
