Commuter train derails in Glendale

Associated Press

GLENDALE, Calif. - A Metrolink commuter train derailed early Wednesday in this Los Angeles suburb, and firefighters were searching through the wreckage.

Television reports showed smoke coming from twisted wreckage at the scene of the crash, where two separate trains could be seen derailed.

The derailment in this Los Angeles suburb was near San Fernando Road and Chevy Chase Boulevard.

My gut would go with sabotage from a crackpot over actual terrorism... like, a copycat from that TV show plot line.

Two Metrolinks and a Southern Pacific freight involved.

Southern Pacific was bought out by Union Pacific in the 1990s.

I hadn't heard on KNX yet that the driver was alive (although I missed the very tail end when I finally got to work!) but I got the impression that they thought it was a deliberate act as well........unbelievable.

No wonder Baca was as vocal as he was...was trying to tell from voice (with not being able to see expressions obviously on the radio) if it was at the whole tragic situation or if it it had been intentional. I was hoping that was NOT the case.

Sheriff Baca talking again. The driver is talking to the police. They are not saying he is in custody, but Baca is not talking about what he said, but DID just say the vehicle was not stalled but put on the tracks deliberately. Appears intentional. Sheriff very upset, barely containing anger, but remain professional.

Thanks for the info. The question we're watching now is who/where is the driver of that Jeep.

Watching KTLA (in SD we're seeing it nonstop on that LA station) I saw them with mountains of the costco water bottles that come in the pallets of like 24...bunches of them stacked up (the pallets)...it's great that with the resources Costco has right there that they are able to get some things to help the injured and rescuers before some of the other agencies are even able to really respond (like Red Cross, etc.).

The Pentagon City Costco did that on 9/11 for the Pentagon.

FoxNews now reporting that a vehicle may have INTENTIONALLY been placed on the tracks to cause the initial derailment.

9 Dead, 100 injured.

KFI has gone to Rush. (Incidentally, yesterday he said Hillary is running, and running hard, for '08)

This hits a little close to home. My wife and I frequently take the same train from Moorpark to downtown L.A. I know exactly where the accident happened. Compared with driving the 101, especially in the rain, this event won't deter me at all. I don't have statistics but I imagine a lot more drivers get killed than train passengers in the same time period.

They can't find entire parts of a car, but are finding some pieces of wreckage, so saying basically they are unsure if there really was a car involved, but some remnants seem to indicate so.

They'll find most of the pieces under the train. When a train and a car argue over the right of way, the train wins every time.

Since the driver is alive and talking to LASD, that would be the only logical explanation, unless it stalled. In either event, the car was demolished.

Additional info...
Train speed this location authorized at 79 mph. Very likely doing in the mid/upper 70's at impact(s)..

I just got on-line, so forgive for jumping in, in the middle of this, but are you saying that the accident was in Los Felix? My daughter lived there until a year ago.

Or a dumbass who thought he could beat the train over the tracks. It happens quite frequently. When I lived in Sacramento, at least once a year we had car vs. light rail. Light rail won each time.

If he thought he could beat the train, he wouldn't be alive/missing. The driver would have been found with the wreckage or thrown close to the point of impact.

The accident was in Glendale, near the Burbank border, which is just north of the Los Feliz section of Hollywood.
