A culture of life for America got a big boost from President Bush as he addressed, from Camp David by telephone, pro-life demonstrators in DC marking the 32nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade. He told abortion opponents he shared their support for 'a culture of life' and lauded progress in passing legislation to protect the vulnerable.
Presidents Bush and Chirac plan to have dinner in Europe next month. The president is also planning to host Chirac in the United States sometime soon. Bush plans to stop in Germany, and to meet with Russia's Putin in the Slovak Republic during his visit to Europe.
The Bush administration plans to announce it will seek about $80 billion in new funding for military operations this year in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife, Lynne, will lead a US delegation to Poland for observances marking the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camps. Cheney will tour Auschwitz, honor Holocaust survivors, speak at the international forum, meet with Poland's President Kwasniewski, Poland's PM Belka, and Ukraine's President Yushchenko.
Enjoy your visit to Sanity Island!
Thanks, Phancy!
I sent it your way, I hope you can see the pics all right!
He looked very handsome that night :-)
Thanks, I'll have to wait till I get home to look at them as I find I'm locked out of my e-mail here at work, grrrr!
I know. Chirac should keep his smarmy, lying lips to himself.
As Hollywood types go, their personal lives were pretty clean and upstanding, as well. Jeanette married a man, Gene Raymond, who, interestingly enough, looked a lot like Nelson. He was her only husband, and they were married for 28 years, until her death in 1965.
Nelson also had only one spouse, Ann Denitz Franklin, and they were married 28 years until his death in 1967.
Now THAT is something I'd pay to see, LOL!
The description of it being a "working" lunch makes me think the First Lady will not be attending, even if she goes on the trip.
I saw that too, homemom, and think you're right. As usual, Barney was going off in a direction only a Scottish terrier would understand, and the President was trying to get him going toward the WH. Those little tidbits between GWB and that dog make me happy every time.
I think the First LADY probably wants to stay away from that SLIMY girly-man and the Pres. probably wants to keep her away from him. Can you imagine the jokes that must have gone on between Goerge and Laura after Chirac kissed her hand??? LOL!
It makes me feel not so bad when my dogs don't listen to me!
The most powerful man in the world, and this little dog won't listen to him . . . LOLOL!
Judy, thank you for sharing that.
Wow.
I had no idea about things like the children's response -- how galling. How telling.
Even today I get the same way as you if I look at photos or documentaries of that day of horror.
I'm glad you found FR.
That's cool you helped out the little guy with the Pine Derby and that he did so well. My son had a friend's father help him build one and the dad really got into it. The result was a trophy-taking, sleek, cherry-red beauty with a silver-speckled sheen. Boys don't forget things like that, or the men who helped them.
If all you see is his being a Mountie (a stiff-type role), you might think that.......although there are plenty of moments in Rose Marie where he wasn't "wooden"...... but if you watch Maytime, there is no way to think he wasn't a fine actor, and very relaxed when the role called for it.
People often mistake his proper New England demeanor as being aloof (not unlike the image that Poppy Bush had), but it's not really the case. He also had some really lousy roles (as did Jeanette) because they were such huge box office stars that MGM got lazy with them, and thought they'd have hits because of their incredible star power (more popular than Clark Gable at the time).
OK......end of testimonial for Nelson Eddy. Back to the President! :o)
That's a better way of saying how it affected me than any way I could have said it. To me, it felt anointed, which is an extraordinarily unusual thing for me to say about music outside the church, or music by what we would think of as secular artists. It didn't affect just my soul; it moved upon my spirit.
I understand that COMPLETELY, Gretchen.
How close were you when you took that photo? (How much telephoto did you have to use?) It's a jewel.
A lot of times when a teenager gets kissed by a celebrity, you hear that the kid refused to wash her hand or face for days afterwards. Well, I'll bet Laura couldn't wait to wash her hand after Chirac touched it, let alone kissed it.
I get a big kick out of it. But what really interests me is the fact that GWB is so patient with that funny little dog. He never seems to lose his temper with Barney, no matter what the dog is doing. In fact, he must really like the Scottie penchant for independence, because he bought a 2nd one.
I just put a library hold on three Eddy-MacDonald movies: "Rose Marie," "Maytime," and "Phantom of the Opera."
That is a breathtakingly touching song .. and, though I despise BStreisand for her politics and vicious Bush attacks, I recently heard her version of "All I Ask of You" ... I put the "person" out of my mind and just listened to the voice .. oh my, brings tears. Such a shame her gift is used in such vile ways.
