Singer Curses at Inaugural Youth Concert

WASHINGTON (AP) - You might say the Janet Jackson moment of President Bush's inaugural festivities came Tuesday at a youth concert with hundreds of preteen Hilary Duff fans in the audience.

No nudity was involved, but the Vince Neil-style profanity probably didn't win rock band Fuel any fans at the Federal Communications Commission, nor from the parents at the concert. Now the Pennsylvania band is just hoping the concert, "America's Future Rocks Today," wasn't aired live.

Borrowing a word from Motley Crue's Neil, the lead singer of Fuel proclaimed, "Welcome to the greatest ----ing country in the world." Brett Scallions followed with a quick apology of "excuse my language."

The FCC is investigating Neil's wish to band mate Tommy Lee for a "Happy ----ing New Year," which aired live on NBC on New Year's Eve.

The outburst was one of the most interesting moments of Tuesday's concert, hosted by Bush twins Jenna and Barbara, who were in the audience but did not come on stage.

Duff was the headliner at the half-full, D.C. Armory concert, which paid tribute to youth volunteerism and community service. Duff, who performed in a black sequin top, rolled-up jeans and sneakers, warmed up the crowd for the president and first lady Laura Bush.

"My call to you all is that as you enjoy the great freedoms of America and as you enjoy yourself at this inauguration, I hope you take away the lesson of helping somebody in need," said Bush, who arrived toward the end of the concert after Scallions' remark. "And when you do, it will not only make our country a better place, it will lift up your own spirit."

Other performers included 2003 "American Idol" winner Ruben Studdard, pop singer JoJo and the band, 3 Doors Down. Also appearing were former football player Jason Sehorn, actor Stephen Baldwin, who rode a skateboard onto the stage, and "Access Hollywood's" Nancy O'Dell, who co-hosts the entertainment show with Billy Bush, whose father, Jonathan, is the brother of former President George H.W. Bush.

A crowd favorite, besides Duff, was singer-songwriter Ryan Cabrera, a Dallas native who whipped up the audience with his jams on the guitar and the drums. Cabrera, 20, said his last trip to Washington was in the seventh grade on a field trip. "I lost my contact lens in the Capitol," he told the audience, urging them to keep an eye out for it.

If you are offended by these words or don't want your kids to hear them, then lock them in a room. People swear. That is reality. If *you* don't want your kids to swear, or want them to hear it- you control that until they're old enough to make their own choice. But you simply can not control what other people do or say.

Ironic... isn't it.... I wish the RNC had just hired a polka band and played pin the tail on the donkey with ice cream and cake.... That really would have brought out the youth in droves......
Think Barbara and Jenna would have shown up? >:)

"You go ahead and try to control other people and what they say, or even what you expect of them."

HUH?? Let me get this staight; You're saying I'm "trying to control" you? And what you "say"? By giving MY opinion? That's rich.

You may "wonder" why "republicans have such a reputation for being uptight," but I fully understand why some Republicans are deemed "hypocrites."

What's deemed bad for Democrats is just as bad for Republicans.

"Let's put it this way: I'd much rather hear..."

I totally agree. BTW the F-word doesn't offend me... I've been in the Army for 21 years (and guilty of using foul language at times when it wasn't entirely appropriate) :-)

Yeah - it's a shame Frankie Yankovic isn't around anymore.

LOL. You're awfully defensive. No one is telling you how to live your life. But yet, you expect someone to not swear because you don't like it? ROFLMAO.

Oh my golly gosh...why didn't they get someone like Pat Boone, Wayne Newton, Slim Whitman or Shirley Temple to entertain the young people at this concert? They would have been so much more wholesome .

Yup. No influence peddlin' here...

If influence is being peddled, the target is not the President but those who are buying tickets to the parties.

I notice you didn't answer my question. Instead, you went off on some ridiculous rant reminiscent of the paranoia liberals often express toward morality.

So O.K. - the FUK* word is no mainstream.

Why not bring Janet Jackson back on Sesame Street and let her have an oral sex episode with Madonna in early morning prime-time - JUST TO SHOW THE KIDS WE CARE.

Ok. If venue and context doesn't matter, then put your theory to the test. Say the "F" word. But do it in church...

Will you accused them of telling you how to run your life?

Oh good grief. Give me a break. You get pissed off because someone uses the F word, then when someone challenegs you, you get mad because someone is telling you what to do, and now you bring up some silly analogy about the F word in church? Let me ask you this. Why are you so worried about one word?

I think people used the "F" word before 1964 (I know I did).

"Pissed off"?? I wouldn't say that. Maybe a little indignant at the fake "slip" of tongue regarding the use of the "F" word at the inauguration -- just so some punk could prove how tough and "edgy" an artist he is at this event. The fix was in to defy the "bible-thumpers." You should be happy.

It was however my dear YOU who are indignant at my indignance -- characterizing it as my "trying to control" people. Now who is being silly?? Give ME a break.

My point IF you are ever to get "it" regarding my church analogy is to underscore the concept of "context" and propriety.

Do you really need any more proof than the negative reaction of a large portion of Freepers to the "F" word or Kid Rock's performing at the Inaugural?

Some of us weren't much impressed with the "cool" kids who smoked at the back of the school bus either. We still aren't.

So then why not ignore the cool kids? Ignore those who say the F word. The irony here is that so many people focused on Kid Rock and swearing, that someone else actually did it. Whether or not it was some fix to defy the bible thumpers no one will ever know. Sometimes people just swear.
