Yankee or Dixie? Take the Quiz
Yankee or Dixie ^

Posted on 01/14/2005 11:10:39 AM PST by Hillary's Lovely Legs

Yankee or Dixie?
Check on your dialect and see if you might have crossed over to the "other side"! Simply click on the correct answer. As you go, the quiz will automatically interpret each answer to show you what your answer implies about you. When you are done, press Compute My Score. Your score will be calculated as a percentage: 0% is pure Yankee and 100% is pure Dixie.

  • Do not change your answer during the test as it will ruin the score. You may do this after scoring is calculated to see the other answers.
  • If you make a mistake, hit Clear below to restart the test!
  • I regret that I do not have time to entertain discussions about this test or negotiate changes. It is provided strictly as-is and for entertainment purposes only.
  • Be aware that television entertainment has a lot of northern dialect in it. This will have more of an influence on you than you expect.
  • This test is based on results from the Harvard Computer Society Dialect Survey of 30788 respondents.

"I got a 91% dixie.I was in Michigan a couple of times, everytime I spoke someone said HUH??"

I was in Connecticut last year; went shopping at some high-toned place while my husband was doing some business. The sales lady helping me dragged me over to the other sales women, and said, "LISTEN to her talk! Isn't that Texas accent adorable?!"

Yikes! I left, forgot about spending any money (thrilled my husband!), and stayed in the motel the rest of the time!

The first time I heard grinder and hoagie was in the Adam Sandler song, "Lunchlady Land". LOL! Seriously! I only put together what it was when he says, "meatball sandwich".

We didn't travel much when I was growing up (obviously!).

In Chicago and Cook County there is still a law on the books that no liquor can be sold before 11 AM on Sunday mornings. About 2 months ago they were talking about repealing it and people were going nuts like they were going to allow kitten kicking on city hall property.

I gotta move.

One of the questions was totally bogus. All true Southerners know that the plural of y'all is "all y'all".

LOL. You are not getting "good" answers and FR is supposed to be educational. "Dixie" is generally thought of as the southern US, but it lives in the hearts of many of us who are not actually located there.

i've got an Ida Few, and sisters Uva and Una (be careful with those) and a Ma Edna, and a Mae (those two were from Knee Deep, Georgia)...and then there were several Sisters and a few coudin' Bens around.

I have an aunt by marriage, Ruby, who has a sister, Pearl. Their mother is Opal. By total coincidence my cousin married a girl named Crystal. Yes, they are from the south.

Apparently, they count the "common throughout the United States" and "common nearly everywhere" responses as "Dixie." So if none of your responses might have anything "Southern" about them, you still score points if you don't use the words or expressions that are confined to New England, or Pennsylvania, New York or the Middle West. It's a nice quiz, but it doesn't tell you "how Southern you are."

It goes on around here all the time. It is a mess to clean up especially if it rains on it. High school students like to do it to someone they know.

89% Dixie.
Seeing as how my ancestors came with LeMoyne, and thought this swamp was a fine place to live, I guess that makes sense. ;->
