'SOCKS DOCS' JURY GRILLS CLINTON CRONY
New York Post ^ | 1/12/05 | IAN BISHOP and DEBORAH ORIN

Posted on 01/11/2005 11:41:41 PM PST by kattracks

Former Clinton White House Mr. Fix-It Bruce Lindsey emerged tight-lipped yesterday after testifying before a federal grand jury probing whether top-secret documents were illegally removed from the National Archives.

The grand jury probe, reported exclusively in The Post Tuesday, is digging into why another former Bill Clinton aide, Sandy Berger, sneaked the national security documents out of the Archives — possibly in his socks.

Lindsey denied any inside knowledge about Berger's sticky fingers.

"All I know is what he [Berger] said. He made a public statement," said Lindsey, Clinton's deputy White House counsel, after testifying under oath yesterday.

Berger admits walking off with 40 to 50 top-secret documents from the archives, but claims it was an "honest mistake" while vetting documents for the 9/11 commission.

Berger has admitted destroying some documents — he says by mistake.

Lindsey declined comment on what he told the grand jury, but denied reports that he met with Berger in New York for crisis control as the scandal erupted last summer.

[snip]

Among the documents Berger lifted were multiple drafts of a report assessing the 2000 millennium threat that is said to conclude that only luck prevented a terrorist attack then.

That conflicts with Berger's sworn testimony to the commission — he claimed "we thwarted" millennium attacks by being vigilant, not lucky.

I wonder if the archivists were in the habit of breaking rules for people, or if this was a special case. And if so, why? That might tell us a lot. Especially since I'm still wondering who blew the whistle at the archives, the people in charge or the underlings?

See previous posts on this thread (#223 is one) that notes that very shortly after Berger was first caught by staff to have taken documents, a potential replacement for the Archives director was approached and eventually the WH requested the sitting director's resignation. It doesn't *seem* to take a rocket scientist to deduce this was the reason.

However, I'm reluctant at this time (though I'm open-minded) to assign culpability to him and feel incomptence or lax oversight over highly sensitive documents was the reason.

Now, what we know is employees appear to have been very concerned once they noticed missing documents, and they took steps to catch him and went to authorities. It's true there may be "good" employees who took steps while "bad" employees aided the misdeeds and we just haven't heard about the "bad employees"...yet.

There are two versions on what happened when Berger was first caught. An official told reporters that employees called Bruce Lindsey after the September visit and requested the return of documents. The sting was set up in October and Berger hired an attorney after being caught again in October. His attorney's version is that Lindsey was not called in September and Berger claims he was not made aware of missing documents until the October visit.

(sheesh, hope that's clear--a review of the timeline linked in #223 to an earlier post should help you sort it out)

I agree. President Bush does not want the country to lose faith in its government, and with the way things are right now, charging Clinton would ignite a civil war.

I wouldn't mind seeing him named as an "unindicted co-conspirator" though.

It is possible that Berger was up to all of this stuff to protect someone else, though. I just don't have enough information to know who it would be.

I have been looking for information on Gulfsands Oil, but I can find no information on who owns it (it is privately held).

I'm still looking .. but I did find this

The contract was signed by Syria's Oil Minister, Ibrahim Haddad and Chairman of Devon Energy company, John Dorier and Executive Director of Gulfsands Petroleum, James Haket.

Found some more info

Gulfsands Petroleum looks to Iraq
Houston, US conpany Gulfsands Petroleum looks to Iraq
Gulfsands, who are a small Houston based outfit with three employees founded by John Dorrier in 1997, are hoping to use a recent oil exploration deal in Syria as a springboard to jump the queue of companies hoping to attract contracts once the new oil authorities in Iraq complete their plans on how to develop the countrys oil reserves.
In May Gulfsands and its partner Devon Petroleum signed a contract to drill at least four wells in Syrias Suwaidiyah field which extends over the border in to Iraq. They expect to spend US$17mm looking for oil and gas there.

You may be right. We cannot forget the documents and memos accrued during the Bimbo/Whitewater/Rose Law Firm investigation have been "SEALED" for 50 years. This group are terribly afraid America will find out just how corrupt and treasoness they were/are. Watch those long fingers during this time of raising Tsunami money for the victims.

If you go HERE you can see biographical information on their management. Three people are listed. The third is an Arab from the United Kingdom.

Remember how, the other day, on other threads, people were complaining that BUSH was letting Berger get a FREE PASS, the Clinton's, a FREE PASS.

Don't suppose any of em will come apologize to you, me or the Bush's?

Yea, and the teenage waitress at Starbucks was a sexual predator as well. She was constantly chasing BC all over DC. (/sarcasm)

Well, she was until some of Hillary's Dixie Mafia hitmen staged a robbery at Starbucks, and left the money, while killing the girl.

They never apologize. Never. They just disappear until the next issue comes along for which they can launch attacks and invective.

This is why I don't argue with these folks anymore. They simply want to bash President Bush, using any excuse they can find.

Even then I was screaming at Pat Robertson to do something for once but again the republicans seemed to have no cajones to confront the democRATS. Do the democRATS have so much untoward evidence against our elected republicans the republicans cannot defend the conservative American agenda? I am so disgusted with their namby pamby, no courage approach toward the democRATS, I can hardly stand to watch republicans defending whatever they cannot.

True? Elements of it are true, some of it is speculation that has yet to be proven.

There was a DC Starbucks, that BC used to frequent, that was robbed, and a female waitress killed, and the masked robbers did not take any money.

That much is true.
