Former Clinton White House Mr. Fix-It Bruce Lindsey emerged tight-lipped yesterday after testifying before a federal grand jury probing whether top-secret documents were illegally removed from the National Archives.The grand jury probe, reported exclusively in The Post Tuesday, is digging into why another former Bill Clinton aide, Sandy Berger, sneaked the national security documents out of the Archives — possibly in his socks.
Lindsey denied any inside knowledge about Berger's sticky fingers.
"All I know is what he [Berger] said. He made a public statement," said Lindsey, Clinton's deputy White House counsel, after testifying under oath yesterday.
Berger admits walking off with 40 to 50 top-secret documents from the archives, but claims it was an "honest mistake" while vetting documents for the 9/11 commission.
Berger has admitted destroying some documents — he says by mistake.
Lindsey declined comment on what he told the grand jury, but denied reports that he met with Berger in New York for crisis control as the scandal erupted last summer.

Among the documents Berger lifted were multiple drafts of a report assessing the 2000 millennium threat that is said to conclude that only luck prevented a terrorist attack then.
That conflicts with Berger's sworn testimony to the commission — he claimed "we thwarted" millennium attacks by being vigilant, not lucky.

See previous posts on this thread (#223 is one) that notes that very shortly after Berger was first caught by staff to have taken documents, a potential replacement for the Archives director was approached and eventually the WH requested the sitting director's resignation. It doesn't *seem* to take a rocket scientist to deduce this was the reason.
However, I'm reluctant at this time (though I'm open-minded) to assign culpability to him and feel incomptence or lax oversight over highly sensitive documents was the reason.
Now, what we know is employees appear to have been very concerned once they noticed missing documents, and they took steps to catch him and went to authorities. It's true there may be "good" employees who took steps while "bad" employees aided the misdeeds and we just haven't heard about the "bad employees"...yet.
There are two versions on what happened when Berger was first caught. An official told reporters that employees called Bruce Lindsey after the September visit and requested the return of documents. The sting was set up in October and Berger hired an attorney after being caught again in October. His attorney's version is that Lindsey was not called in September and Berger claims he was not made aware of missing documents until the October visit.

I wouldn't mind seeing him named as an "unindicted co-conspirator" though.
It is possible that Berger was up to all of this stuff to protect someone else, though. I just don't have enough information to know who it would be.

You may be right. We cannot forget the documents and memos accrued during the Bimbo/Whitewater/Rose Law Firm investigation have been "SEALED" for 50 years. This group are terribly afraid America will find out just how corrupt and treasoness they were/are. Watch those long fingers during this time of raising Tsunami money for the victims.

Even then I was screaming at Pat Robertson to do something for once but again the republicans seemed to have no cajones to confront the democRATS. Do the democRATS have so much untoward evidence against our elected republicans the republicans cannot defend the conservative American agenda?
