MONA SUTPHEN

A Foreign Service officer from 1991-2000, she served as Special Assistant to former National Security Adviser Sandy Berger and as an Advisor to former Ambassador Bill Richardson at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations. Other assignments included the Office of the High Representative in Sarajevo, the State Department Human Rights Bureau and U.S. Embassy Bangkok, Thailand.

"The Clinton Administration had, in fact, been watching Al Queda and Osama Bin Laden back in the 1990s, particularly after the 1998 attacks on U.S. embassies in Africa that were linked to Bin Laden’s network, said Mona Sutphen, former special assistant to National Security Advisor Samuel Berger.

“At the White House, we were reorganizing ourselves to deal with this threat,” she said. “We knew there was more to come but were never quite sure from where or how or when.”"
