Maria donates $10,000 to Thai quake victims 29th December 2004

Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova, due to play an exhibition match in Thailand against Venus Williams, will donate $10,000 to help victims of the killer tsunamis that hit the kingdom, a minister said on Wednesday.

Deputy Prime Minister and tennis association head Suwat Liptapanlop said the Russian starlet, scheduled to arrive in Bangkok late on Wednesday, had notified him about her generosity.

"She informed us that she wanted to donate 10,000 dollars of her own money to the government's victim relief fund," Suwat said.

The fund, launched yesterday, had already received donations amounting to 108 million baht ($2.77 mn), according to media reports.

Although a gala dinner to be held for Sharapova and Williams would be cancelled out of respect for the unprecedented loss of life, the match scheduled for January 2 in the northern city of Chiang Mai was due to go ahead.

You both seem to be suggesting Sharapova did this for the publicity. In fact, I think you'll find it was the deputy PM who chose to publicise her donation.

Meanwhile, hundreds of redneck Americans do exactly the same, without fanfare

Yeah - but do they pay for the roadkill they eat?

Why on earth would anyone want to read about some hillbilly donating money?

I don't think the survivors will care about motivation.

Don't be too hard on her. She may have just notified the government as a way of effecting the transaction and someone in the government released the information.

Timmy, where is the original home page you say this came from?

That is not an official Maria home page.

My guess it is yours.

At least it's $10K more than the "moral force" of the world has given so far...

How could you possible be more arrogant and condescending? Go back to DU if that is your attitude, you sanctimonious twit.

Hey loincloth lips, this girl, Maria Sharapova, is the best part of America, loves her mother and father, and stands with this country.

Check out my last 6000 or so posts on FR, and keep your ignorant, uninformed posts to yourself!

You expressed yourself very badly -- if you were trying to support Ms. Sharpova then you don't start out by calling people ignorant.

I was in support of her -- your post made it look like you were slamming us who were supporting her.

Learn to post properly or don't post at all.

True charity should be given anonymously. To expect public acclaim for charity drains it of its moral purpose.

Well said.

For celebs, it is better for them to do so publicly to try to inspire other to do the same.

Agreed.

Is she an American now? Since when?

And why does her supposed homepage go to someone's personal web pageand resume?

Check out the link given by the person who started the thread.

True charity should be given anonymously.---foolish.

She didn't have to give anything and no one really would have noticed, but since she did, she's open to criticism from the freeper peanut gallery, assailing her motives (which obviously are totally unkown to said peanut gallery).

Right on!
