Tsunami effect: Days get shorter

Reuters

Los Angeles, December 30, 2004|01:53 IST

The deadly Asian quake may have permanently accelerated the Earth's rotation, shortening days by a fraction of a second, US scientists have said.

Richard Gross, a NASA geophysicist, theorised that a shift of mass toward the Earth’s centre during Sunday’s quake had caused the planet to spin 3 microseconds or one millionth of a second faster and to tilt about an inch on its axis.

When one huge tectonic plate beneath the Indian Ocean was forced below the edge of another “it had the effect of making the Earth more compact and spin faster,” Gross said.

He said changes predicted by his model are probably too minuscule to be detected by a global-positioning satellite network, but said the data may reveal a slight wobble.

“Earth’s continual motion is just used to changing. It does slow down and change its rate of rotation. When these tiny variations accumulate, planetary scientists must add a leap second to the end of a year, something that has not been done for years,” Gross said.

Only idiots could confuse 3 microseconds with one millionth of a second; what a loss the neglect of parenthetical enclosure discloses.

And there will be strange events in the skies - signs in the sun, moon, and stars. And down here on earth the nations will be in turmoil, perplexed by the roaring seas, and strange tides. The courage of many people will falter because of the fearful fate they see coming upon the earth, because the stability of the very heavens will be broken up. Luke 21:25-26

Ps 46 "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;....

Prov 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

Did the Alaskan earthquake wobble the earth? How much time was gained or lost? If the Sumatra quake wobbled the earth, does it offset the Alaskan quake? Does it all zero out the time loss/gain theory?

This is pure BS from journalists who neither know what they're talking about nor give a damn if they scare a couple more old ladies reading their putrid mind-ooze.

I feel better writing that.

Some modern prophets are saying that time is speeding up. Perhaps some physicists are talking quietly about this phenomenon but are staying officially silent. If time is in fact speeding up it must be true for the whole solar system -- if indeed it is true and is capable of scientific verification. For example Read This Opinion posted on this Catholic web site.

If time itself is speeding up, then this quake-tsunami-time-effect may be a result or effect rather than the "cause." Kinda like that German movie "Run Lola Run:" Where the running woman says, "Before the game is after the game and vise versa." Yada, yada, yada.

Perhaps time appears to be speeding forward to me only because I believe that time is speeding up. I just know that today I was on the web for a time and went to the store and could not believe how late in the day it had become. The day just vanished. Like being at work and not realizing that the whole day had rushed by. Whatever. Oh, well . . .

<<>> It wasn't just Bush, it was all of those SUVs idling in traffic at airports in the US that set up a harmonic vibration in the earth's crust that triggered the quake. IT WAS THE EVIL SUVS TOO!!!!!!

No.

Quite possibly, PJ, having your head in the frigde searching for the olive to garnish your dagwood sammich is the reason you miss these valuable seconds of "entertainment".

However, I could be wrong about that and you're abusing the "more than two shakes" rule in the toilet.

Sounds like a geophysicist who is looking for some attention. Nothing supports his "theory".

Democrats will say, "The earthquake which caused the tsunami was brought about by all the celebrating Republicans jumping up and down when President Bush stole the election (again)".

Which will then lead Michael Moore to film a documentary about how natural disasters are caused by Republicans to kill babies.

And then the French will surrender.

If this is true, would'nt it decrease the amount of U.V. rays hitting the earth on a daily basis, therefore causing "global cooling"?
